  1. How did the Medici, Florence, and Brunelleschi contribute to the Renaissance?
  • The Medici Family was able to contribute in the following ways:
  • The medici family
  • Cosimo, the father of the Medici family patronized the artists of Florence
  • Talented artists supplied by the Medici made an economy that was centered around the art market
  • Brunelleschi had used Greco-Roman concepts to build the dome of Florence, a symbol of religion.
  • Brunelleschi rediscovers perspective in 3D and a vanishing point of a painting.
  • His dome was also a architectural innovation becoming the most complex building in all of europe and becoming the centerpiece of florence domination the skyline
  1. How do the renaissance artist writers express renaissance values?
    • Botticelli reflected on paganism and Greco-Roman gods such as La Primavera and The Birth of Venus both by Boticelli.
    • This expressed classicism due to the Greco-Roman values present.
    • Da Vinci - Last Supper : a. Secular Humanism: Human nature, expresses emotions of the reactions by the people at dinner from Jesusโ€™ word b. Individualism: Rather than having the same emotion, each has a different reaction. c. Classicism uses Greco-Roman ideas like the vanishing point to present order, balance, and proportion (3 doors on each side; 6 people on each side of the room. Additionally adds the eye of Jesus as the vanishing point of the piece. - Creation of Adam by Michelangelo:

a. Secularism: portrait of an ordinary woman and does not have anything to

do with God

b. Individualism: shown in this painting because of the realistic colors and

details on her clothes

c. Classicism: used the division ratios, angles and shapes known from

classical geometry. Additionally, he used the golden ratio, the best known

of the classical division ratios to create the painting.

  1. How did the Renaissance spread from Northern Italy to Northern Europe AND how did it show change and continuity
    • INvention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg: a. Ideas spread rapidly throughout Europe b. First rise of literacy in Europe since the fall of Rome c. Bible written in Vernacular language, led to skepticism of Church and priests translating it - Shows Golden Age, art and literacy being increased rapidly with no signs of decline โ— The renaissance can move north because firstly the north stabilizes โ—‹ Hundred year war ends โ—‹ Bubonic plague ends โ—‹ Populations rise โ—‹ Cities grow rapidly โ— patrons of art grow like wealthy merchants and strong monarchies โ— 1494 Italy is invaded, causing artists like Da Vinci to evacuate to northern Europe โ— Continuity โ—‹ Both study classics โ—‹ Both worked with new techniques โ—‹ Both focused on individuals and individual rights start of democracy โ— But it also shows change as in the north they โ—‹ Masters of detail โ—‹ More symbolism โ—‹ And had christian humanism thought that with education through the classics and bible one could improve
  2. How does the ren shows change and continuity โ— Firstly it shows change by evolving and changing from the values of the middle ages โ— For example the 4 of the ren values โ—‹ Humanism - changed as during the middle ages focus was on god but know human are the center โ—‹ Individualism - changed as before artist would not even sign their name on their work but now people try to make a name for themselves โ—‹ Secularism- before they focused on the after life and walking the road to salvation now there's more of a focus on the worldly life seen through the change in people's life style

โ—‹ Skepticism - People used to listen and not question church officials or the pope but know with translations they can read start to question authority โ— shows continuity by taking inspiration from and using values from Greco Roman culture โ— This can be seen clearly in classicism. Classicism a ren value to look back on the classics and take inspiration for them showing continuity as they are growing of of the past keeping it the same โ— Raphael school of athens Michelangelo David Michelangelo Pieta Michelangelo creation of adam Leonardo da vinci Mona Lisa Leonardo da vinci the last supper Raphael Marriage of the Virgin Botticelli Birth of Venus
