Decoding and Separating Mixtures: A Chemistry Exercise, Slides of Chemistry

An overview of mixtures and methods for separating heterogeneous mixtures. It includes decoding exercises and identification tasks related to mixtures. Various separation techniques such as using fans and wind, gravity, panning, immiscible liquids, strainers, and magnets. Each method is described with examples to illustrate the separation process, making it a useful resource for understanding practical applications of mixture separation. Suitable for high school students studying basic chemistry concepts, offering a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical examples to enhance comprehension and application of the material. It is designed to reinforce learning through decoding exercises and identification tasks, promoting active engagement with the subject matter.

WAYS OF SEPARATING HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURES

  • Separation using Fans and Wind
  • Separation by gravity
  • Separation by panning
  • Separation by Immiscible liquids
  • Separation using strainer
  • Separation using magnets

SEPARATION USING FANS

AND WIND

  • A traditional way of separating rice grains from hulls is done through winnowing. In this process, grains are tossed in front of a fan. The lighter objects like rice hull and dirt are blown away while the heavier rice grains fall straight into the container.
  • Alternatively, this can be done only with a bilao. In the Philippines, a traditional way of winnowing is done by tossing the mixture of rice and hulls placed on a bilao.

SEPARATION BY PANNING

  • A traditional used by gold hunters to get gold is through panning.
  • When a person pans, they scoop gravel from the riverbed. They get a small amount of water and gently swirl the pan. This separates the heavy and light materials in the mixture.

SEPARATION BY IMMISCIBLE

LIQUIDS

  • Immiscible liquids like oil and water can be separated by pouring or scooping out the topmost liquid. This process is called Decantation.

SEPARATING USING

MAGNETS

  • Magnets can pick out some metals from a mixture. Recycling facilities recover scrap metal using electromagnets.
