ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE

Humankind needs to KNOW :

How?

Why?

When?

What?

Where?

Who?

SCIENTIFIC THEORY

The outcome of fundamental science is Scientific Theory.

Scientific Theory is a model of reality.

A model IS NOT reality but only REPRESENTS it.

Therefore

A theory is a formalized set of concepts that organizes

observations and inferences and predicts and explains

phenomena.

Dr. Salma Mohamed

What is Research?

Basic scientific research is defined as fundamental

theoretical or experimental investigative request for

information to advance knowledge without a specifically

envisioned or immediately practical application. It is the

quest for new knowledge and the exploration of the

unknown.

If we knew what it

was we were doing,

it would not be called

research, would it?

Albert Einstein

Dr. Salma Mohamed

research is a way of thinking

examining critically the various aspects of your day-to-day

professional work; understanding and

formulating guiding principles that govern a particular

procedure; and

developing and testing new theories that contribute to the

advancement of your practice and profession.

It is a habit of questioning what you do, and a systematic

examination of clinical observations to explain and find

answers for what you perceive,.

Dr. Salma Mohamed

Research: a way to gather evidence for your practice

  • (^) Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the

delivery of services based upon

research evidence about their

effectiveness.

Dr. Salma Mohamed

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF

RESEARCH

  1. It is an honest and exhaustive process.
  2. The facts are studied with understanding.
  3. The facts are discovered in the light of problem.

Research is problem-centered

  1. The findings are valid and verifiable.
  2. Research work should contribute new knowledge

in that field. It gathers new knowledge or data

from primary or first-hand sources.

Dr. Salma Mohamed

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF

RESEARCH

  1. It places emphasis upon the discovery of

general principles.

  1. It is an exact systematic and accurate

investigation.

  1. It uses certain valid data gathering devices.
  2. It is logical and objective.
  3. The researcher resists the temptation to seek

only the data that support his hypotheses.

Dr. Salma Mohamed

CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD

RESEARCHER

  1. should be problem-solution minded.
  2. should have mastery on the area and should have

specialization in the field studied.

  1. should have a scientific outlook about the area.
  2. should have tolerance and patience.
  3. should be honest and devotee to his work.
  4. should have the curiosity to find out something

new or to answer some questions which are still

to be answered.

Dr. Salma Mohamed

THE FUNCTIONS OF RESEARCH

The main function of research is to

improve procedures through the

refinement and extension of knowledge.

Dr. Salma Mohamed

Standards of good Research Practice

To Be Honest

To Be Open

To acknowledge fully the role of collaborators and other participants

To Be critical About your Results

To Record and Document your results accurately

To ensure that data is stored securely and for the appropriate amount of time

To exercise a duty of care to all those involved in the research

Dr. Salma Mohamed

How to Achieve good Research Practice

1.Honesty

2.Openness

3.Critical self assessment

4.Transparency
