Reading 10 Guide Questions for Better Understanding
The four common attitudes toward the "Retraction" and its bearing on the life and character of Dr Rizal are as follows: (a) The official Roman Catholic position insists that the Rizal to be remembered and honoured is the "converted" Rizal; (b) Rizal throughout his adult life was a "free thinker and unbeliever"; thus the Retraction is of necessity a lie; (c) The Rizal that matters is the pre-Retraction Rizal; therefore one can ignore the Retraction; (d) Scholarly investigation of all facets of Rizal's life and thought is desirable for everyone has every right, and also an obligation, to seek to know the facts with regard to the Retraction.
The rejection of Masonry (“I abominate Masonry”) and A repudiation of “anything in my words, writing, publications, and co nduct that has been contrary to my character as the son of the catholic church”
“Open Attacks”, and lastly, the Stage of “major and minor works about Rizal”.
On May 18, 1935, Father Manuel Garcia, an archdiocesan archivist, uncovered the real retraction document. He spotted it while looking through a stack of paperwork in their new fireproof vault
Fathers Balaguer and Pi testified under Notarial Act to establish that their statements were true and from Rizal, not someone else. The Notarial Act is useful for any testimony because it increases the document's credibility and admits that a witness was there to guarantee that both parties signed the document and that no forgery occurred.
The following are the major arguments for the Retraction: The Retraction "Document" is considered the chief witness to the reality of the Retraction itself; The testimony of the press at the time of the event, of "eye-witnesses" and other "qualified witnesses"; The "Acts of Faith, Hope, and Charity" reportedly recited and signed by Dr Rizal as attested by "witnesses" and signed Prayer book; The Acts of Piety performed by Rizal.
The following are the grounds against the Retraction: the Retraction Document is deemed a fake; other acts and facts do not match well
the Catholic hierarchy represent the pro-retraction party. Because they are all ordained priests, it is thought that their statements are true. Members of Masonry, an institution that fosters fraternity, honesty, decency, and professionalism, are their opponents.
