Report of the President of King’s College Scholarship Funds Alumni and friends of the College have contributed to the establishment of scholarships assisting the men and women at King’s. Additional information on these scholarships is available from the office of Financial Aid. The African Student Scholarship To provide a King’s education to worthy students who are residents of an East African country. The Guy A. and Norma J. Agati Memorial Scholarship Established in memory of her husband, Guy A. Agati, by Norma Agati, a former member of the Board of Directors of King’s College. After Mrs. Agati’s death, their daughter renamed the scholarship to honor both of her parents. Recipients are selected on merit and need. The Maria T. Alexander Health Professions Scholarship Established by Dr. Patrick Kerrigan, physician for the Alexander family, to honor the memory of Maria Therese Alexander, the daughter of King’s professor, Dr. Chris Alexander ’79 and Melissa Alexander ’85. Students in pre- medical fields who have need are eligible. The Alumni Scholarship This scholarship was established through the proceeds of sales from the Alumni Collection. It is intended to assist children of alumni who choose to follow in their parents’ footsteps to attain an undergraduate degree from King’s College. The Paul J. Arthur and Margaret T. Arthur Scholarship This scholarship was established by the late Margaret T. Arthur to assist students in need of financial assistance. Preference is given to residents of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The Eleanor Babonis Physician Assistant Scholarship Established by alumni, family and friends of Eleanor Babonis upon her retirement as the Program Director of the Physician Assistant Program. Intended to aid a first year professional phase student as he/ she embarks on the didactic portion of Physician Assistant training. The Ann P. Balz Memorial Scholarship Given in memory of Ann P. Balz, the first employee of the College, who contributed greatly to the early administration of the school. The Charles F. and Beatrice Balz Scholarship Established in 2011 by Charles F. Balz, Class of 1950, in recognition of the valuable education provided by Holy Cross Fathers. The Dr. Anthony D. Berard, Jr. Scholarship Established by the Mathematics Department in honor of Tony Berard’s forty years of distinguished service, to support a junior or senior majoring in mathematics who has demonstrated exceptional talent in abstract reasoning. The Marjorie Bart Scholarship Established by the children and friends of the late Marjorie Bart, who had served as secretary for the Athletic Department for almost 20 years. The Albert and Mary Bellsey Scholarship This scholarship was established by a bequest of Albert and Mary Bellsey, neighbors of King’s College. The Stanley B. Benjamin Family Scholarship For a resident of Northeastern Pennsylvania in financial need. The Earl N. Blasi Scholarship Established in the McGowan School of Business by Earl N. Blasi, former member of the Advisory Council, the scholarship aids local students at King’s College. The Mr. and Mrs. John Bonin Endowment Established by Mrs. John Bonin. The Peter Bosack Scholarship Established by the Estate of Peter Bosack, a member of the first graduating class of King’s College--1950, this scholarship provides assistance to a student from Northeastern Pennsylvania with a high school or King’s G.P.A. of 3.0 or above. Preference is given to first-generation college students. The Boscov’s and Alexander W. Dick Foundation Scholarship Established by Boscov’s Department Stores, funded through direct contributions from Boscov’s Department Stores and grants from the Alexander W. Dick Foundation. Awarded annually to assist capable and worthy students, especially sons and daughters of employees of Boscov’s Department Stores. The Dr. Brian K. Bower Scholarship Established by the Political Science Department at King’s College to support a student who demonstrates strong potential in the field of Political Science. The Dr. James LeBaron Boyle Scholarship Proceeds from the fund are presented to exceptional students in recognition of their having studied literature and the arts in Europe. The Carl J. Broghamer Scholarship Created through a bequest by Mrs. Louise Broghamer in memory of her husband for deserving students of good scholastic standing. The Gladys Brooks Foundation Scholarship The Foundation established this scholarship to assist deserving students based on their academic ability. The Grace Coakley Brooks Memorial Scholarship Established by Charles I. Brooks, Ph.D., son of Grace Coakley Brooks, to support a junior or senior psychology major. Report of the President of King’s College The Dr. Donald I. Buzinkai Memorial Scholarship A need based scholarship for deserving students, this scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Donald I. Buzinkai, a long-time member of the King’s College Political Science Department. The Edward P. Carroll Scholarship Established by Edward P. Carroll ’63 for scholarships for talented debaters and the operating expenses of the forensics program. The Brandon J. Case Memorial Scholarship Established to honor the memory of Brandon, who was a King’s College student when he died of leukemia in 1999. Originally, the Brandon J. Case Memorial Fund was established as a graduation award. The fund now endows the Brandon J. Case Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to an outstanding History major or Geography major. The Centennial Scholarship of the Episcopal Diocese of Bethlehem Established by a gift from the Diocesan Council of the Diocese of Bethlehem to commemorate its centenary. The Century Club Scholarship Fund Established by the King’s College Century Club of alumni and friends. The Gene Chismer Memorial Scholarship Established by a group of alumni and friends to honor the memory of Gene Chismer, Class of 1954 and varsity lineman on the Monarch football team. The Ann Rhoda Chopick Memorial Scholarship Established from the generosity of Ann Rhoda Chopick through an estate gift, this scholarship will assist King’s College students studying in undergraduate business programs. Christ the King Scholarship General scholarship fund to accommodate unrestricted scholarship contributions to help needy and deserving students. The Christ the King Scholarships are drawn from among the following: The Antoinette Cembrola Fund, The John J. Dougherty Memorial Fund, The Anna Evans Scholarship, The Huber Foster Debate Scholarship, The Alvin G. Funke Scholarship, The Greater Pittston Scholarship, The Catherine and Carmen Mauriello Scholarship Fund, The Frank and Mary O’Connell Endowment, and The William Perugino Scholarship. The Citizens’ Voice Scholarship Created by the Board of Directors of The Citizens’ Voice with funds matched by the Chairman of their Board, Mr. Eberhard Faber, to assist children and grandchildren of employees of The Citizens’ Voice. The Thomas J. Coburn Scholarship Established through a bequest of Thomas J. Coburn in his memory. The Robert E. Connelly Scholarship Established by alumni, including former King’s College debaters, in honor of Robert E. Connelly, C.R., Professor of English and Director of Forensics, for talented debaters. The James Connerton Scholarship Established by the first President of King’s College, Father James W. Connerton, C.S.C., in memory of his father. The D. Leonard and Mary G. Corgan Scholarship Created by the family and friends of the late D. Leonard and Mary G. Corgan, former members of the Board of Directors. The Crahall Foundation Scholarship Frank and Betty Crahall established this scholarship for students in the following areas of study: Media Communications, Business Administration/ Entrepreneurship, Fine Arts/Music, and Information Technology. The Gloria P. and Harry H. Crawford and Dr. Carol G. Crawford Scholarship Established by Gloria P., Harry H., and Dr. Carol G. Crawford, for a junior or senior from Luzerne or Lackawanna County who has demonstrated excellence in mathematics. The Cross Valley Chapter, American Business Women’s Association Scholarship Awarded to a female, full-time student, who is a resident of Luzerne County, taking course work in the business area. The Norman Crotty Scholarship Established by Dr. David Crotty in honor of his uncle, this scholarship provides financial aid for students who have academic merit and financial need. The James E. Curran Memorial Scholarship Established through a bequest from Elizabeth Curran in memory of James E. Curran. The Fred H. Davies Scholarship Established from a bequest of Fred H. Davies. The Barbara Ann DeCesaris Memorial Fund Established in memory of King’s College alumna, Barbara Ann DeCesaris ‘79, by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Angelo P. DeCesaris ‘53, for physically handicapped students to include their special equipment and service needs. The David L. Desiderio Scholarship Funded by Anthony J. Desiderio and his wife, Mary Ellen Desiderio, in honor of son David L. Desiderio, a member of the King’s College graduating class of 1988, for a business or human resources major. The Dombroski Family Scholarship Established by Thomas Jr. and Sr., Ronald, Susan, and Joyce in honor of their parents and grandparents. The Charles Donin Scholarship Established by Charles and Sadie Donin through a legacy to the College. The Thomas A. Donohue Scholarship Established by a bequest of Thomas A. Donohue, a resident of the Wyoming Valley. The Betty Marie Duffee Memorial Scholarship This direct scholarship was established to reward graduate students in Reading Education for their thesis project. Report of the President of King’s College The James E. Kelly, C.S.C., Scholarship Established by Mr. and Mrs. Robert McLaughlin in honor of Rev. James E. Kelly, C.S.C., with preference given to a sociology major. The King’s College Employees Scholarship Established by the employees of King’s College during the Legacy of Excellence Capital Campaign, this scholarship assists King’s students from the Wyoming Valley with high financial need. The Harold W. Kitzman, Jr., Scholarship Established by Mr. and Mrs. Harold W. Kitzman, Sr., in memory of their son, Harold W. Kitzman, Jr., Class of 1973. The Louis Kneidinger Scholarship Established by members of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Northeastern Chapter, family, and other friends in memory of Louis Kneidinger, a 1952 graduate, for an accounting student. The Frank L. and Theresa Knorek Scholarship Established through a bequest of Frank L. Knorek in his and his wife’s memories. The Mary Koons Scholarship Created by the late Miss Mary Koons, long- time friend of the College. The Christopher Kopernik Memorial Scholarship Established by a bequest of Francis L. and Lidia M. I. Kopernik to assist sophomores, juniors and seniors, with preference to students who are of Polish descent from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. The Anthony C. Kunec Scholarship Established by Dr. Peter ’52 and Mrs. Ingrid Kunec in memory of their son, this scholarship assists students from Plains or Wilkes-Barre Area, Pennsylvania. The Patricia A. Landmann Scholarship Established in 2014 by Barbara Landmann ’78 in memory of her mother, for a deserving student who overcomes personal challenges to attend King’s College. The Robert Laux Scholarship Established by Robert Laux, former President of the Century Club, to aid needy students. The Jane M. Lenahan Memorial Scholarship Established by the sons and daughters of Jane M. Lenahan of the Career Planning and Placement Office to benefit students who demonstrate financial need. The Dorothy C. Leonard Scholarship Established by William J. Leonard ’75 and his wife, Anita, to honor the memory of his mother by assisting needy students. The Morlyn Lesho Memorial Scholarship Established by the family and friends of Morlyn Lesho, a Biology student at King’s College, this scholarship is given to students in their junior year who demonstrate financial need, with preference given to Eagle Scouts or Girl Scouts who have earned the Gold Award. The LF Brands, Inc., Scholarship Created and is maintained by The LF Brands Companies, Inc., giving preference to children, grandchildren, and spouses of employees of LF Brands. The Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Lipo, Sr., Scholarship Established by Frank J. Lipo, Jr., Class of 1954, in honor of his parents, to aid students from Luzerne and Lackawanna counties requiring financial assistance. The Mark Lopatofsky Memorial Scholarship Established in 1998 by Dr. John Lopatofsky and the late Mary Mroczka Lopatofsky in memory of their son, Mark, for students from Wyoming, Susquehanna, Bradford, and Luzerne counties. The Thomas J. Mack, Sr. Scholarship Named in honor of the late Thomas J. Mack, Sr. by his son, Thomas, Jr. The George P. Maffei II Memorial Scholarship An annual scholarship award to a liberal arts student with need who is interested in participating in theater productions. The Robert J. Manganiello Scholarship Established by Eberhard Faber, Robert Manganiello and The Citizens’ Voice for a full-time student who is a resident of Luzerne County. The Marian Year Scholarship Established in honor of the Marian Year by George R. McLean, former faculty member. The Ann Marie Gerrity Martin Scholarship Established by Dr. John Martin in honor of his wife, giving preference to graduates of Catholic high schools. The Maslow Lumia Bartorillo Advertising, Inc., Scholarship Awarded to a King’s student or students who demonstrate proficiency in the major fields of language, English literature, creative writing, journalism or communications. The Marjorie Neusch Massey Study Abroad Scholarship The purpose of this scholarship is to support students who wish to study abroad in order to challenge and expand their understanding of the world and global relations. It is a need-based scholarship open to full-time King’s students or King’s students enrolled in at least six summer credits abroad. The John D. McCarthy Scholarshp Established by John D. McCarthy, Class of 1957, for students requiring scholarship and financial aid assistance. The John A. McCole Scholarships Established by the McCole Foundation in memory of John A. McCole. The Msgr. Andrew J. McGowan Fund Established by a bequest of Msgr. Andrew J. McGowan, this fund is intended to provide financial assistance to students in need of emergency funding. Report of the President of King’s College The John J. McGowan ’61 Scholarship Scholarship to honor John’s retirement and over 40 years of dedicated teaching and service to his accounting students and King’s College. Annual scholarships will be awarded to King’s students who have completed 45 credits at King’s and are entering their junior year as an accounting major and have unmet financial need. The Gerald R. McGrath Scholarship Established by John W. McGrath to honor the memory of his brother, Gerald R. McGrath, Class of 1954. Awarded to a junior or senior majoring in communications. The John and Peg McKeown Scholarship Established by the family of John McKeown and his wife, Peg, for students of Irish descent enrolled at King’s College. The Anna L. McLaughlin Scholarship Established to provide assistance to those studying for the priesthood. The Robert J. McNelis Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Robert J. McNelis, Class of 1962. He was a devoted, loving husband, father, and grandfather, who dedicated his life to protecting the security of the nation for 50 years. During his career at the National Security Agency, he earned many awards for his contributions as an outstanding mathematician and achieved the rank of Senior Technical Expert. This scholarship in his honor is awarded to a Junior or Senior math major who has demonstrated academic merit and need. The John McShain Scholarship Established by the John McShain Charities, Inc. The Michael Melchior Scholarship Established by the Estate of Marian C. Melchior in the name of her son, Michael Melchior, to assist needy students. The Francis X. Millnamow Scholarship Created through a bequest of Mr. Millnamow for a male student from Swoyersville. The Edward J. Minsavage, Ph.D., Memorial Scholarship Established in 1997 by Mrs. Edward Minsavage in memory of her husband to benefit a biology major who demonstrates financial need. The Jonathan Moore Scholarship Established by Mrs. Elizabeth Hope Moore to honor her nephew, Jonathan Moore, Class of 1989. The William and Eileen Mulligan Scholarship Established by William G. Mulligan, preference is given to two local Engineering students of average academic ability, needing financial assistance and having a strong motivation to succeed. The Rev. Charles F. Mulrooney Scholarship, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Wilkes-Barre Awarded to a Roman Catholic student of Irish descent with preference given to children or grandchildren of Hibernian members. The James F. Mundy, Esquire, Scholarship Established by the firm of Powell, Powell, and Powell to honor the outstanding efforts in the field of law of James F. Mundy, Class of 1965. The Kenneth F. Mussari Scholarship Established by Dr. Anthony J. Mussari, Class of 1963 and a member of the faculty, and his wife, Kitch Loftus-Mussari, to honor the memory of his brother. Awarded to a Wilkes-Barre student majoring in education. The New York Times Company Foundation Scholarship Awarded to a minority scholarship student in mass communications entering his or her senior year. The Bernard F. O’Brien Scholarship Fund Established by a grant from the Borg- Warner Foundation and John D. O’Brien, Class of 1964, in honor of Mr. O’Brien’s father. Preference given to a Human Resources Management major from the Wyoming Valley. The Patrick J. O’Connor Scholarship Established by the family and friends of the late Patrick J. O’Connor, father of several King’s alumni, to benefit students of one-parent families residing in the Wyoming Valley. The Lawrence ’65 and Susan O’Donnell Scholarship Established by Lawrence O’Donnell of the King’s College class of 1965 and his wife, Susan, to benefit students with financial need majoring in any of the business disciplines. Preference to students who also have a special interest in entrepreneurial studies. The Bridget and Thomas O’Hara Scholarship Named in memory of early supporters of the College who were also the parents of two King’s College alumni. The Rev. Thomas J. O’Hara, C.S.C., Scholarship for Community Service This scholarship was established in 2011 by friends, family and former students of Father O’Hara to commemorate his twelve-year presidency. The purpose of this endowment is to acknowledge the national recognition Father O’Hara brought to King’s College for integrating community service into the College’s educational experience. It is a need-based scholarship that offers tuition support to students who have a demonstrated record of community service. The scholarship endowment is funded by many philanthropic people who seek to acknowledge the special contributions Father O’Hara made to the community and to the lives he touched during his presidency. The Janet E. Ortolani Scholarship This scholarship is established in memory of Janet E. Ortolani by her husband, King’s College alumnus Dominick J. Ortolani ’62, and their sons Anthony E. ’87 and Michael D. Ortolani to benefit local students who demonstrate significant financial need. The Mary Kozel Panaway Scholarship Established by Attorney Anthony B. Panaway, a member of the first graduating class of King’s College 1950, to honor his wife. Report of the President of King’s College The Charles E. Parente and Mary M. Parente Endowment for Financial Assistance Established by Charles E. Parente, Class of 1962, and his wife, Mary, for qualified local students. The John and Anne Parente Scholarship Established in memory of the parents of two King’s College alumni, John Parente ‘57 and Charles Parente ‘62, by their sons and their friends and business associates. The G. Frederick and Anne Koons Parrish Scholarship Established by a bequest of Mary R. Koons. The Frank J. ’71 and Donna M. Pasquini Scholarship Established by former Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Frank J. Pasquini ’71, and his wife, this scholarship honors the members of the Pasquini Family who are King’s College alumni. It is designated for a student who demonstrates significant financial need and who resides in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The Diocese of Passaic Scholarship Established to assist students from the Byzantine Catholic parishes in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The Ann Mary Perez Memorial Scholarship Established by Dorothy M. and Jerome J. Perez ’54 in memory of their daughter, this scholarship assists students entering their senior year pursuing a primary major in Chemistry or the physical sciences and Mathematics. The Jerome and Mary Perez Scholarship Established to provide assistance to Junior and Senior Chemistry majors by Joseph ’55 and Jerome ’54 Perez to honor the memory of their family, Jerome and Mary Perez, Sr. and the deceased members of their family. A coal miner who valued and encouraged his family to obtain a college education. “They lit the candle”: (2 sons: 1 BS, MS; 1 BS, MS, PhD; 9 grandchildren: 8 BS/A’s, 5 MS/A’s, 1 Law; 14 great grandchildren: 3 BS/A (plus work in progress) and 2 great, great, great grandchildren). May this endowment be of assistance to some members of our extended family at King’s to attain their goals. The Katherine E. Phelan Memorial Scholarship A memorial Scholarship to honor the memory of Katherine E. Phelan, a King’s alumna of the Class of 1997. This yearly award is presented to a student in need in the Physician Assistant Program at King’s College. The Bernard J. Pinola Memorial Scholarship The wife and daughters of alumnus Bernard Pinola of the King’s Class of 1969 established this scholarship in his memory. First consideration given to accounting majors from a single mother family. The Helen Nicholson Pinola Scholarship Established in honor of his wife by the late Hon. Frank L. Pinola, an original incorporator of King’s College and one of its first Directors, for a student in a health- related field. The Shirley Shipula Pinola Scholarship Established in memory of Shirley Shipula Pinola by her husband and family, for a female student from the Wyoming Valley. The Reverend Clement J. Podskoch, C.S.C., Scholarship Established by the Reginas of King’s College to honor their moderator of 30 years, for use by a full-time sophomore or junior student at King’s demonstrating financial need and residing in Luzerne County. The Ken Pollock Scholarship Established by former Board Member Ken Pollock, for a student from the Northwest Area High School. The Pope John XXIII Scholarship Established by students of King’s College on the occasion of the Pontiff’s death, with additional funds contributed by priests of the Diocese of Scranton. The PricewaterhouseCoopers Scholarship Established in 1980 by the international accounting and consulting firm, Coopers and Lybrand, and renamed to the PricewaterhouseCoopers Scholarship in 2012, this scholarship is for deserving young men and women majoring in accounting. The Joseph L. Purcell Scholarship Established in memory of Joseph L. Purcell by his family and friends for a marketing student. The Jan Evangelista Purkyne Scholarship Created through the auspices of Mrs. Wilbur Mead Hayes, nee Stritesky, in honor of the Czech physiologist. The John and Sharon Randolph Scholarship Established by Director John Randolph ’63 and his wife, Sharon, for students majoring in accounting. The Martin Reardon Memorial Scholarship Scholarship in accounting established in the McGowan School of Business in honor of Martin Reardon ’66. The Annamay K. Remaykis Memorial Scholarship Established by Charles Remaykis in honor of his wife who served in the Business Office for 33 years. The Rev. William R. Ribando, C.S.C., Scholarship Initiated by William and Dorothy Ribando in honor of their son, Rev. William Ribando, C.S.C., a teacher at King’s College and former chair of the Theology Department, for a student from the Williamsport area. The Brother Harold Rogan, C.S.C., Memorial Scholarship Dr. Richard Alley, a member of the King’s College Board of Directors, established this scholarship in 2010 at the death of Brother Harold Rogan, C.S.C., the last surviving founder of King’s College in 1946. The Joseph P. Rogan Memorial Scholarship Established to honor the memory of Joseph P. Rogan who was a King’s College student and member of the theater stage crew when he passed away in 2008. The fund was established by his parents to assist students from Coughlin High School and/or students involved in the theater department and/or stage crew.
