ADOLESCENCE

The age period of an adolescent is ages 10-19. Adolescence is the period of transition between childhood and adulthood. It includes some major changes to the body and the way a young person relates to the world. Understanding what to expect at different stages can promote healthy development throughout adolescence and into early adulthood.

EMOTIONAL CHANGES IN

ADOLESCENT

  • (^) Two emotional changes in adolesents are: Mood swings and Peer pressure. Mood Swings: During adolescence Mood Swings are hormonal shifts that occur during puberty plays a major role in the way teens mature. They experience increased irritability, intense sadness, and frequent frustration due to the chemical changes occuring inside their brains. Peer Pressure: Peers play a huge role in the social and emotional development of children and adolescents. Their influence begins at an early age and increases throughout the teenage years. COGNITIVE (BRAIN) CHANGES IN

ADOLESCENTS

Two Cognitive changes are: Anxiety and Depression. Anxiety: Anxiety during adolesence typically centers on changes in the way adolesents body looks and feels, social acceptance and conflicts about independence. When flooded with anxiety, adolesents may appear extremely shy. They may avoid their usual activities or refuse to engage in new experiences. Depression: Depression in adolescents is a constant feeling of sadness and loss of interest, which stops them from doing their normal activities. Generally, depression does not result from a single event but from mix of events and factors. Cognitive changes are associated with the development that is occuring in the prefrontal cortex inside of the brain.
