Scientific Method Notes

1. What is the Scientific Method?

● A step-by-step process used to investigate questions and solve problems.

● Helps ensure objectivity and reliable results.

2. Steps of the Scientific Method

(In order, but sometimes repeated or adjusted!)

  1. Observation

○ Notice something interesting or ask a question about the world.

  1. Research

○ Gather background information.

  1. Hypothesis

○ Form a testable prediction ("If...then..." statement).

  1. Experiment

○ Test the hypothesis with a controlled setup.

○ Independent Variable: What you change.

○ Dependent Variable: What you measure.

○ Control Group: Group not exposed to the independent variable (for comparison).

  1. Analyze Data

○ Look at results (tables, graphs) to find patterns.

  1. Conclusion

○ Decide if the hypothesis was supported or not.

○ Report findings.

  1. Repeat

○ Experiments are often repeated to verify results.

3. Important Concepts

● Theory: A well-tested explanation (e.g., Theory of Evolution).

● Law: A statement of fact describing an action (e.g., Law of Gravity).

● Bias: Avoid letting opinions or expectations affect results.
