What is it?

  • The Scientific Method:
  • A manner of approaching and answering ___________ through _____________ and ______________

The Major Steps:

1. 1. Problem/QuestionProblem/Question: Determine

the central ___________ that

needs to be solved.

2. 2. ObservationObservation:: Research your

topic of interest & make

observations about it by

using your __________________.

The Major Steps:

3. 3. HypothesizeHypothesize: Predict a possible

answer to your problem or

question. What do you think will

be the result of your

experimentation? Must be

______________ and _______________.

  • (^) Example:Example: IFIF the temperature in the classroomthe temperature in the classroom is higher, is higher, THENTHEN students will sweat morestudents will sweat more profusely in the classroom. profusely in the classroom.

The Major Steps:

6. 6. ConcludeConclude:: Create a statement that

either ________ or _________ your

hypothesis. Make recommendations

for future study and discuss sources

of error.

7. 7. CommunicateCommunicate:: Share what you

discovered with other scientists

through presentations and lab

reports.

Step 1 - The Problem:

Does the amount of sugar used in baking bread affect the amount of time that the bread

needs to completely rise?

Step 2 - The Research

John uses the internet to look up bread recipes that use different amounts of sugar and observes the rise times for each. John also takes to a local baker.

Step 4 - The Experiment:

Procedures:

  1. Create 3 identical bread doughs with different sugar amounts
  2. Roll dough into 1 in. diameter balls.
  3. Let rise in identical spaces until dough is 8 inches in diameter Materials:
  4. bread dough materials
  5. sugar
  6. warm, dry room
  7. metric ruler
  8. timer
  9. data chart

Step 5 - The Results:

John finds that bread with more sugar took less time to rise to the 8 inch mark. He charted and graphed his data.

Step 7 - Sharing:

John shares his findings with his mom and the baker using the graph that he created and a poster explaining his experimental method.

Do you know the differenceDo you know the difference between the independent between the independent and dependent variables? and dependent variables?

Dependent Variables:

  • (^) The dependent variable is the factor that will change as a _______ of the experiment that you perform.
  • (^) It is also known as the _____________ variable because it responds to changes in the independent variable.
  • (^) It is usually what is __________ in an experiment.
  • (^) In this case, the dependent variable would be the SIZE of the loaf of bread.

The Control Group

  • In a scientific experiment, the control is the group that serves as the ___________ of comparison! You must have this in order to measure results!.
