Characteristics of social stratification : According to MM TUMIN the main attributes of stratification are : 1. It is social . - Stratification is social in the sense, it does not represent biologically caused inequality. It is true that such factors as strength, intelligence, sex, age can often serve as the basis on which statuses or strata is distinguished . Biological traits do not determine social superiority or inferiority until they are socially recognised and given importance . Thus Tumin has pointed out that the stratification system is : 1. Governed by social norm and sanctions, 2. It is likely to be unstable because it maybe disturbed by different factors and 3. it is intimately connected with the other systems of society such as politics, family, religion , educational and so on. 2. It is ancient — According to historical and archaeological records Stratification was present even in the small wandering bands. Age and gender were the main criterion of stratification then. Difference between the rich and poor , powerful and humble , freeman and
