Re : Soil Sample Analysis
A detail soil and land evaluation assessment/study has been undertaking in Biyo baxay Kebele, of Dambal
Woreda, Sitti Zone to carry out a feasibility study and detail design of irrigation development project which
is sustainable and environmentally sound. For this purpose, a soil sample has been collected from
representative sites to characterize and decide on each representative land units. A full analysis of this
selected samples are required to compile and produce quality report describing each land units.
The main horizons of all soil profile pits were sampled and samples are to be fully analysed. The laboratory
follows the Procedures for Soil and Plant Analysis ed. Sahlemedhin Sertsu and Taye Bekele, NSRC, EARO
(2000). A total of 10 (ten) samples from 2 (two) profiles were collected and will be analysed for the
following parametes:
Particle size (Bouyoucoshydrometer, sieving)
-Sand (0.10 – 2.00 mm), %
-Very fine sand (0.06 – 0.10 mm), %
-Silt, (0.06 – 0.002mm)%
-Clay, (<0.002mm)%
Organic carbon, OC (Walkley and Black)
Total nitrogen, N (Kjeldahl)
pH (1:2.5 soil suspension, water and KCl) (pH electrode)
Cation exchange capacity, CEC (pH 7.0 ammonium acetate extraction,
filtration).
Exchangeable cations, Ca, Mg (pH 7.0 ammonium acetate extraction, EDTA
titration)
Exchangeable cations Na, K (pH 7.0 ammonium acetate extraction, flame
photometer)
Available phosphorus, P (Olsen)
