Spring Constant ESSAY, Essays (university) of Mathematics

When a load F suspended from lower free end of a spring hanging from a rigid support, it increases its length by amount x (Extension), then F α x or F= k x, where k is constant of proportionality, it is called the force constant of the spring or the spring constant.

Spring Constant

Objectives:

To find the spring constant of a helical spring by plotting graph between load and

extension.

Apparatus

Spring, a rigid support, slotted weights, a vertical wooden scale, a fine pointer, a hook.

The student can use different similar tools that perform the same function.

Theory

When a load F suspended from lower free end of a spring hanging from a rigid support, it

increases its length by amount x (Extension),

then F α x

or F= k x,

where k is constant of proportionality, it is called the force constant of the spring or the

spring constant.

Procedure

1. Set up apparatus as shown in the diagram. Suspend the spring from a rigid support.

Attach a pointer and a hook from the free end.

2. Hang a hanger from the hook.

3. Set the vertical wooden scale such that the tip of the pointer comes over the scale.

Structure and format of project report The comprehensive report that each group should prepare and submit for this assessment, while it must thoroughly incorporate the above tasks and steps, has to be structured according to the format indicated below with the following sections: Section Explanation of the content Introduction and Background Concepts, notions and applications in relation to spring constant; followed by statement of objective, as to defining the problem and stating the purpose and goals of the present investigation. Experimental Work List of equipment/apparatus and materials; description of procedure for carrying out the experiment. Results Experimental measurements and data, processed/manipulated data, calculation, graphical presentation… Data should be properly presented in tabular form. Calculations should be clearly labeled and commented upon when not self-explanatory. Graphs should be titled, and axes labeled with the units indicated. Discussion and Conclusion Obtained results to be interpreted and discussed and outcome evaluated. What relationships were discovered/Were there any significant sources of error/Are there any improvements to the procedures to limit the error… And any other observation and/or comment can also be presented. Close the report with a review that highlights and justifies your data analysis outcomes and validity. Appendix Supporting and supplementary information such as drawings, photographs, and statistical data can be shown here.
