Applied Biostatistics in Health Sciences: Exhaled Nitric Oxide Data Analysis, Exercises of Biostatistics

A hypothetical study on the analysis of exhaled nitric oxide (eno) concentrations in children using statistical methods. The collection of data through eno testing, calculation of mean, mode, median, standard deviation, and assessment of normality. The data provided consists of eno concentrations in parts per billion (ppb) for a sample of 15 children.

Hypothetical study:
Exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) is increasingly gaining acceptance as a pulmonary function test reflective of
airway inflammation. A sample of 15 children were subjected to exhaled nitric oxide testing, by exhaling
into an analyzer using a steady, controlled exhaled flow rate of approximately 50 mL/sec. The test is
repeated until three reproducible results are obtained and the mean value is reported below. Normal
levels of eNO concentrations range between 5 and 15 ppb (vol).
Data:
13, 11, 10, 13, 6, 19, 13, 9, 12, 16, 14, 18, 21, 5, 23
Questions:
1. What type of data is exhaled nitric oxide (vol)? Please justify your answer.
Continues - intervial depends on the unit
2. What is the mean exhaled nitric oxide in your sample? 13.5
3. What is the mode? 13
4. What is the median? 13

  1. What is the mean exhaled nitric oxide in your sample? 13.
  2. What is the mode? 13
  3. What is the median? 13
  1. Calculate the standard deviation SD. Please provide a table that presents your calculations. 5
  2. It this data normally distributed? Please justify your answer. 15 samples- if they are equal or almost means it is normal mean= 13.5 almost 15 so it is normally Dist.
  3. Based on the distribution of the data, please complete the following sentences: a. 68% of children have exhaled nitric oxide volumes between ________ ppb and _______ppb. 68- (mean – 8.5 and 18. b. 95% of children have exhaled nitric oxide volumes between _______ ppb and _______ ppb. 95+- sd 3.5 – 23.
  4. What proportion of children have exhaled nitric oxide levels below 15? Work 61.
