Grading on Curve

Number of students who will earn each letter grade is determined before the start of the course e.g. Only Top 2 % Students get โ€˜Aโ€™ Grade 2% Students must Fail The curve referred to is the normal bell-shaped curve, is used to describe data on a sizable heterogeneous group.

8

Standard Deviation

Students are graded by considering โ€œspread of marks around the meanโ€ Defin: โ€œA standard deviation is a number that indicates how much a group of scores vary from one another on averageโ€

Review of Fundamentals

Lecture 2

First Moment of Areas (Principles)

  • The coordinates of the centroid of an area can be obtained by dividing the first moments of that area by the area itself.
  • The first moments of the area are also useful in mechanics of materials for determining the shearing stresses in beams under transverse loadings.
  • If the centroid of an area is located on a coordinate axis, the first moment of the area with respect to that axis is zero. Conversely, if the first moment of an area with respect to a coordinate axis is zero, then the centroid of the area is located on that axis. 19
