Introduction to Stationary Waves
How waves form standing patterns through superposition
Stationary (standing) waves are formed when two waves of the same frequency and
amplitude travel in opposite directions and interfere. They produce points that appear to stay
still (nodes) and points of maximum vibration (antinodes).
Key points:
Nodes: points of zero amplitude (destructive interference)
Antinodes: points of max amplitude (constructive interference)
No net energy transfer
Found in musical instruments, microwave ovens, and radio antennas.
