Student 1 English 20 Veronica Miranda October 12, 2015 Essay 5 Weakness and Strength English class in college is complicated because it was difficult for me to understand the structure of an essay. It also requires a lot of work. I had to write a journal and rough draft every week. In this English class I discovered that I had strengths and weaknesses in my writing in my participation in class. I learned that my weaknesses were that I would use the same words or write the same thing repeatedly but in different ways. Another weakness that I had is that I find it really difficult to build a thesis. Regardless of the weakness I had in English class, I also had some strength. For example, I learned that I can pay attention in class and take notes if I don’t understand something. In addition, another strength that I had was that if I was intrigued in an article we were reading or any topic we were talking about I can fully discuss what happened in the article. In class I had many weaknesses, for example, one was that I would use the same words or write the same thing repeatedly but in different ways. My essays wouldn’t be too interesting because of this. I wouldn’t know what else to write because either I wasn’t really interested in the topic or that I was not really creative when else to write to writing essays. This weakness caused many problems in my essays because I had to write a certain amount of words in each essay and if I kept repeating the same things it will get very boring. Also, I would lose interest and at some point in the essay making it very short as well as incomplete. I think one way I would have solved this problem is by expanding my vocabulary. By doing that my essays would
be more interesting and this would make my essays sound way better than just like my previous way of writing, like restating myself repeatedly. In high school, writing a thesis wasn’t mandatory where as in college, every essay, especially in my English class, required a thesis. Essays without a thesis wouldn’t be considered and essay or points would be taken off my grade. This is one of my biggest weaknesses in the class. It is very difficult for me to construct a thesis for every essay that I have to write. In the outlines that I would do for the essays I can always write the three topic sentences automatically but I can never write a thesis. That was the most difficult and frustrating thing about writing essays because I couldn’t write a simple two sentence thesis statement. To this day, I usually do not have a well written thesis statement in any of my essays. I would always ask for help or ideas from someone else so I can write a good thesis. I don’t know why writing a thesis statement is difficult for me because I see everyone else just writing a thesis like it is nothing. To improve my essays I can look up how to write a thesis because it would help me in writing essays. One of my strengths in this English class is that if I didn’t understand something I pay more attention and take a lot more notes than the usual notes that we typically write in a day. Some students wouldn’t understand something and wouldn’t ask questions or write any notes but I was the opposite. If I didn’t understand something I would write down the notes even though I knew the professor was going to erase it really fast. For example, if we had to write an essay a certain style and I didn’t understand how to write it I would review the notes in my notebook to reassure myself about the particular style. After reading my notes, I would start writing the essay that is why it is important to write notes because then you can just go back and read through your notes if you didn’t understand something. I never used to write notes until I got to college because this work is way more difficult than regular high school work.
