PART 3: WRITING (8 pts) In an essay, “Discuss the impact of modern technology on the tourism industry, including at least two advantages and two disadvantages.” The impact of Modern technology. Modern technology has changed the tourism industry in so many ways how we travel, plan trips and experience destinations. From smart apps to artificial intelligence, everything is making things more efficient and customer centric. But with these advancements comes some challenges that need to be addressed. One of the benefits of modern technology in tourism is convenience and accessibility. With mobile apps, digital maps and online booking platforms, we can plan entire trips from our smartphones. This saves time and gives us flexibility to discover new attractions, compare prices and avoid crowded areas. For example, smart cities like Singapore use real time data to guide tourists to less crowded areas, making the overall travel experience better. Another advantage is energy efficiency and sustainability. Many modern hotels use AI to control lighting, heating and cooling systems. This reduces energy consumption and the environmental impact of tourism. Eco-monitoring tools also help destinations track and manage the impact of visitor activity, support sustainable practices. But there are some drawbacks. One of the major issue is data privacy. The use of apps and smart systems involves collecting personal information, which raises concerns on how data is stored and protected. Tourists may feel uneasy if their privacy is not guaranteed. Another challenge is the cost and complexity of implementation. Setting up and maintaining smart tourism infrastructure requires big investment and regular staff training. Small businesses or destinations in developing areas may struggle to keep up, resulting to unequal tourism development. In summary, modern technology has brought a lot of benefits to the tourism industry, making travel more convenient and eco-friendly. But data privacy and high cost must be managed well so that the benefits of smart tourism is enjoyed by all.
