Nowadays, education is a matter of great concern. Moreover, there are
various ways of education such as Summerhill in spite of getting conflicting
opinions. From my perspective, I strongly believe that Summerhill is an ideal
school because there is no pressure in Summerhill.
To begin with, freedom is appreciated. Students do not have to spend their
time on studying non-essential subjects.They will have more time to develop
their knowledge and skills which is useful for their future without any
pressure. Other side of the coin, people believe that students need to study all
subjects because at least they need background knowledge which is helpful
for their future. In addition, the easy absence of school makes students not
interested in learning so that is one of their reasons for failure, Summerhill
will be blamed instead of taking responsibility for themselves. Admittedly, it
is true that students learn as much as possible but they will not have enough
time to develop in their way. While growing up, they have to learn to take
responsibility for themselves and Summerhill will be the first step in teaching
how to do it.
Secondly, without pressure, children will have a happier childhood instead of
coercion by adults. Pressure only makes children more stressful leading to
bad consequences.For instance, recently, more and more teenagers are
choosing to destroy or even end their lives just to prove how tired they have
to endure the heavy pressure . William Wordsworth, an English Romantic
poet, said that :”Delight and liberty, the simple creed of childhood”. Children
need more time to improve their childhood to have beautiful memories so
they can not spend all their time just studying and missing their youth.
In conclusion, even though Summerhill is not the best choice for schooling,
we can not deny that Summerhill’s education has many advantages such as
independence and having a pretty childhood.It is clear that Summerhill is an
ideal school.
