9. Course Prerequisites: PHYS 1443 (Technical Physics I - mechanics) and
MATH 1426 (Calculus I)
10. Required Readings/Materials: Text book: Engineering Mechanics - Stat-
ics, 12th Edition, R.C. Hibbeler. Pearson Prentice Hall,
11. Course Contents: Fundamental Principals of Mechanics; Forces and Force
Components; Statics of Particles; Moments, Couples and Equivalent Force-
Couple Systems; Distributed Forces; Equilibrium of Rigid Bodies; Internal
Forces of Trusses and Frames; Friction; Centroid and Center of Gravity; Mo-
ments of Inertia.
12. Course Learning Goals/Objectives:
• To develop skills and techniques essential in analyzing and solving quan-
titative engineering problems.

• To study both the fundamental principles of mechanics and their ap-
plications to the equilibrium of rigid bodies/structures under action of
forces.
• To acquire a prerequisite fund of knowledge to studying the mechanics of
materials and of structural analysis and design.

15. Specific Course Requirements
(a) Quizzes:
• At least 5 in-class pop-quizzes
(b) Homework:
• Assigned during lectures and due at the beginning of the following
Monday’s class
• Must be handed in
• Each homework problem will be graded out of 10 points
• Must follow the required format (see Handout #1)
• No late homework is accepted
(c) Exams:
• 2 midterms and 1 final (3 exams total)
