Running head: TAT2 TASK 1 – TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION 1 TAT2 Task 1 – Technology Integration Western Governor’s University
Introduction Many school districts are purchasing Canvas for their faculty to set up online education pages in order to accentuate their teaching experience and allow for teachers and students to have access to content regardless of physical presence. Canvas is a learning management system and is very user-friendly for all involved once it is all set up. However, when a district has an administrator set up the districts Canvas platform according to their standards, this removes Canvas’ introduction to set up, leaving many educators confused on how to set up their Canvas pages. This instruction is created with those in mind who may be required to set up a Canvas page and do not have the time to research how to do so, or maybe don’t have the technological “know how” to do so on their own. Instructional Goal Upon completion of this unit, the learner will be able to set up their Canvas profile with confidence and ease. Performance Objectives Objective one: Given the terminology worksheet and PowerPoint presentation, learners will score at least 9 out of 11 on a Terminology Quiz. Objective two: Given the information on the electronic specifications and profile features discussed in this lesson, learners will score at least 9 out of 10 on a quiz regarding the electronic specs and the features discussed in the lesson. Objective three: Given the information on specific profile features, learners will score at least 9 out 10 on a quiz regarding the features discussed in the lesson. Audience
discussion groups when learners have issues with setting up or they have questions about how to set up a specific feature of their profile.Resources needed for this unit are an electronic device compatible with Canvas (one that can access the internet). Optional resources would be paper, a printer, index cards, and a folder/binder. Description of Each Lesson Plan for the Unit Lesson one description: Learner will follow the link to the Canvas Profile Setup course and see an announcement on the home page with their first steps and where they will find the assignments (modules) and quizzes. They will open module one and save or print the terminology printout. The exercises involved with this lesson are cognitive. They will scroll through the short PowerPoint presentation to note the definitions. After completing the definitions worksheet, the learners will complete a matching assignment for practice only. Upon completion of the matching assignment in Canvas, learners will take a timed Canvas terminology quiz in which they must score at least 9 out of 11correct. Completed terminology worksheet should be stored in the learners Canvas training folder/efolder for future reference. Lesson two description:Learner will open their Canvas course and go to Module 2. They will print the electronic specifications printout. The exercises involved with this lesson are cognitive and constructive. They will scroll through the PowerPoint and take notes on what each of the features covered does. They will then be required to score at least 8 out 10 on a quiz that covers the electronic specifications and the features discussed in the PowerPoint presentation. As a follow-up, they will visit their teacher Canvas page and become familiar with the profile settings discussed and begin setting up their teacher profile. They will need to send a PDF of all the changes they have made to their Canvas page (if you are an administrator of your schools
Canvas, and are offering this unit to your faculty, you can also manually check their progress and not require this submission). Lesson three description:Learner will open the Canvas course and go to Module 3. The exercises involved with this lesson are cognitive and constructive. They will scroll through the short PowerPoint and take notes regarding all of the profile settings covered in this lesson. They will be required to score at least 8 out 10 on a quiz that covers the options taught in this lesson. As a followup, they must apply their knowledge to their profile and submit PDF’s of their updated profile (if you are an administrator of your schools Canvas, and are offering this unit to your faculty, you can also manually check their progress and not require this submission). Student Performance Assessment Description Lesson one assessment:The assessment is Quiz 1 under the Quizzes tab in the Canvas course. It consists of 11 terms and learners must score at least 9 out of 11 correct within two attempts before having to repeat the lesson again. Lesson two assessment:The assessment is Quiz 2 under the Quizzes tab in the Canvas course. It consists of 10 questions and learners must score at least 8 out of 10 correct within two attempts before having to repeat the lesson again.Learner will also be expected to submit screenshots or PDFs of their updated profile page. Lesson three assessment:The assessment is Quiz 3 under the Quizzes tab in the Canvas Course. It consists of 10 questions and learners must answer at least 8 correctly within two attempts before unit is passed.Learner will also be expected to submit screenshots or PDFs of their updated profile page. Evaluation of Six Technology or Software Resources Name of Resource Description/ Category How the technology supports learning Limitation 1 Limitation 2
points Selected Resources The first resource I selected is Quizlet. Quizlet allows the user the possibility of being exposed to incorrect or irrelevant information. To avoid this, I will place a link to the Quizlet created for this course with explicit instructions to utilize ONLY the Quizlet created for the course. The other limitation is the number of ads that may distract the learner. The only way this can be addressed is to encourage the learners to stay focused on why they are there and if they find that they cannot focus past the ads, I will encourage them to create their own manual flashcards and practice with them. Quizlet is an appropriate choice because it is online and follows with the course layout. Through evaluating the three production resources, I found that Quizlet was the easiest to use for both the instructor and the learner and came with more options for learning. Since this course is open to any and all educators, it is important that a productive resource have options that are compatible with many different learning styles. The second resource I selected was the PowerPoint Audio feature. The issues that may arise with this choice is the learners version of PowerPoint and the learners audio capability on their device. I will encourage the learners to make sure their version of PowerPoint is the most recent version. In regards to the audio, I will simply inform the learner that audio has been included in the presentation and therefore, they will need to ensure that they either have audio capabilities or borrow a device (from a friend/family member or at the library) that has audio capabilities should they need the audio portion of the presentation. While evaluating the research-based resources, it became clear to me that this one was a better option than YouTube due to the limitations of YouTube.
The third resource I selected is Facebook. The first limitation that the learner may face is getting distracted by their own social media if they have one. This is always a risk when incorporating any social media into instruction, however, a link will be given directly to the Canvas LMS page and I will encourage the learners to stay focused on why they are there in order for them to get the task completed and submit their screenshot and comment regarding the video or post that they read before their time runs out. The other issue that the learner may encounter is being overexposed to information on the Canvas LMS page. Again, the learners will be encouraged to watch just one video or read one post and then include a comment with their screenshot submission that demonstrates that they did read the post or watch the video. This resource is appropriate for the learning environment because it is an online activity, therefore it falls in line with the rest of the unit’s format. Again, after evaluating the research- based resources, I decided that YouTube was the least of the three that would serve the purpose of supporting the learning process in this unit. Selected Resources Rationale The productivity resource that I selected is Quizlet. This resource will enhance the effectiveness of the instructional unit because Quizlet offers various approaches to drilling. For the purpose of this unit, this is especially useful because I cannot personally know all of the learners so this allows for the learners to choose their own method of drill and practice in order to commit their new terminology to memory. The research resource that I selected is PowerPoint Audio. This resource will enhance the effectiveness of the instructional unit because it offers an audio option for learners who may learn better through auditory means. Not knowing the specific audience, this expands the compatibility of the unit to accommodate learners who struggle with visual learning only.
