Heart and Blood vessels

Cardiovascular System-

Heart and Blood vessels

Muscular organ; ~ size of fist Sends blood low in O 2 to the lungs Sends blood loaded with O 2 to the body Outer covering of heart: Pericardium Has 4 chambers ◦ (^) 2 upper – atria ◦ (^) 2 lower – ventricles ◦ (^) Muscular partition separating right and left : Septum Valves – stop blood from flowing backwards in heart & veins

Have a Heart

Flow of Blood Through

Heart

  1. Enter atria L : O 2 rich blood from lungs R : O 2 poor blood from body
  2. Atria contracts → blood enters ventricle
  3. Ventricle contracts → blood leaves heart L: goes to body to give O 2 R: goes to lungs to get O 2

Two Types of

Circulation

Pulmonary circulation – blood flow between heart and lungs R atrium → R ventricle → pulmonary arteries → lungs → pulmonary veins → L atrium ◦Happy blood – a lot of O 2 ◦Sad blood – low in O 2

Right Atrioventricular valve aka Tricuspid valve Left Atrioventricular valve aka Bicuspid valve or Mitral valve Right Semilunar valve Left Semilunar valve aka Aortic valve

Valve names to

know

CFU:

1. what are the four chambers of the heart?

2. What is the outermost layer of the heart

called?

3. What separates the right and left side of the

heart?

4. What is the function of the valve?

5. What are the two types of circulation?

6. Define two types of circulation.
