Problem 2-

The vertical force F acts downward at A on the two-membered frame. Determine the magnitudes of the two components of F directed along the axes of AB and AC. Set F = 500 N.

Solution

Decompose the vertical force F into components along axes aligned with members AB and AC.

Hibbeler Statics 14e: Problem 2-4 Page 2 of 2

Enlarge the parallelogram and draw the triangle consisting of the vector components and F.

On the right is the triangle with the corresponding vector magnitudes. Use the law of sines to determine FAB and FAC.

F sin 75°

FAB

sin 60°

→ FAB =

F

sin 60°

F sin 75°

FAC

sin 45°

→ FAC =

F

sin 45°

Since F = 500 N,

FAB ≈ 448 N FAC ≈ 366 N.
