Examine the need for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and its role
within the workplace and for higher level learning.
It is the process of upgrading skills and knowledge in order to remain professionally active.
Continuing Professional Development helps to enhance individual qualities and boost the
energy required in the working lives. It is the process for focusing yourself objectives for
development. CPD is all about where you want to be in near future and how you plan to
get there.
Depending upon the professional role and discipline the need of continuing professional
development also changes. CPD is career-long commitment for being professional. CPD is
not maintained only by academic qualification it can be gained through trainings,
workshops, and practical skills. For example, while using MS Word we may not be able to
do what we actually want and we seek help and use YouTube and website for reference
and we gain knowledge about the things that we previously don’t know. This enhance our
skills and helps in personal development and generate positive feelings.
Since last six months I have been working in an IT company and facing lots of challenges
and to handle that challenges and problems there need to be use of CPD. It helps to
enhance our skills, knowledge and develop confidence which is the most important for
professional development.
There is no age boundary for CPD and no limitation as it is an ongoing process. Being
worker in IT Company it is important to develop CPD as it helps to build our confidence
level and enhance personal development too. CPD is not only important for the company I
work but it is more beneficial for me in real time as it is overall wellbeing. CPD will make
you feel more valued in the company and motivates you to work harder than before. In my
personal experience I feel that investing in CPD is always worthy as it teaches the thing
that are related to our life. The main objective of CPD in my workplace is to make staff
independent and to secure better future. There is various step for CPD and among them
most important are listed below as it helps to identify and set goals.

Steps of CPD and its contribution:

  1. Set your goals: The most important step is knowing your field of interest and setting goal for long term as well as short term. Setting realistic goal will surely lead you to success. Setting goals make easier to take decision and work on it to solve any difficulties we face. Question ourselves will make easy to set goals. Present situation Worker in an IT company Position I want to be As a system administrator What I need to do to obtain my goals I need to gain a lot of experiences and I need to be able to manage time as well and I need to be responsible Keeping progress record We must keep record in each stage so that we can tally
  2. Implementation: Only setting goals I not sufficient to achieve the position that we want so we need to implement plan into action. Being dedicated and working hard will definitely leads us to that position one day so continuous effort is required to be in the position we want to be.
  3. Keep record of our progress: Keeping record is important as it is used to tally our previous record with the new one and easily, we can find where we are lacking behind and easily, we can focus for our goals. Record is also used for future references. Record helps us to be in right track as well
  4. Reflect: Reflecting means looking about our plans, records and finding what we have to do in coming days. Reflect helps to recall about what we have learned and encourage to do well in future. CPD is important in an IT company because of following reasons.
  5. CPD identifies and fill skills gap between staffs and helps in staff development.
  6. CPD like attending trainings, seminars can enhance or rise to meet emerging challenges and current need of the people which is far more effective for a company than hiring a new staff.
