Tutorial Sheet 1
24th January, 2020
Due Date: Week beginning 27th January 2020
1. What is Systems Analysis and Design?
Organizational process that a team of business & systems professionals use
to develop and maintain computer based IS’s.
2. What is the Systems/Software Development Methodology?
A systems/software development methodology is used to develop and
support information systems, they follow a life cycle and the SDLC or systems
development life cycle. It comprises of several phases that marks the
progress of systems analysis and design, notably: Planning, Analysis, Design,
Implementation & Maintenance.
3. What is a Systems Analyst?
The primary role of a systems analyst is to study the problems and needs of
an organization in order to determine how people, methods, and information
technology can best be combined to bring about improvements in the
organization. A systems analyst helps system users and other business
managers define their requirements for new or enhanced information
services.

1. What is Systems Analysis and Design? Organizational process that a team of business & systems professionals use to develop and maintain computer based IS’s. 2. What is the Systems/Software Development Methodology? A systems/software development methodology is used to develop and support information systems, they follow a life cycle and the SDLC or systems development life cycle. It comprises of several phases that marks the progress of systems analysis and design, notably: Planning, Analysis, Design, Implementation & Maintenance. 3. What is a Systems Analyst? The primary role of a systems analyst is to study the problems and needs of an organization in order to determine how people, methods, and information technology can best be combined to bring about improvements in the organization. A systems analyst helps system users and other business managers define their requirements for new or enhanced information services.

4. What questions should the Systems Analyst ask at each phase of the SDLC? f 5. Briefly describe each phase of the SDLC. Planning – The first phase in the SDLC is planning. In this phase, someone identifies the need for a new or enhanced system. Information needs of the organization as a whole are examined, and projects to meet these needs are proactively identified. Needs/Requirements identified, analysed, prioritized. Analysis – The second phase in the SDLC is analysis. During this phase, the analyst thoroughly studies the organization’s current procedures and the information systems used to perform organizational tasks. Analysis has two subphases. The first is requirements determination. In this subphase, analysts work with users to determine what the users want from a proposed system. Requirements are structured. Design – During design, analysts convert the description of the recommended alternative solution into logical and then physical system specifications ranging from input and output screens to reports, databases, and computer processes. They provide physical specifics of the system they have designed, either as a model or as detailed documentation, to guide those who will build the new system. Logical Design (Functional Requirements, Non-functional requirements) Physical Design – Logical design transformed into technology-specific details Implementation – System specifications are converted into Coding, testing installation, support Maintenance – IS is systematically repaired and maintained

9. Discuss how CASE Tools are used in the SDLC. { Planning Analysis UPPER CASE TOOLS Design } { Implementation Testing LOWER CASE TOOLS Maintenance } List the benefits of using CASE Tools and their disadvantages. Disadvantages – Cost of tools are high, training for persons using the tools takes time, using CASE tools will not prevent you from making a poor IS.

Reading and questions to be answered on your own: Read Chapter 1 in your prescribed text.

  1. Compare and contrast the various agile software development methodologies: eXtreme programming, object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD), rational unified process (RUP).
  2. List the products, outputs or deliverables for each phase of the SDLC.
