DR. JOSE P. RIZAL (1861-1896) National Hero of the Philippines JOSE R1 ZAL, Filipino patriot, martyr, and genius, occupies an eminent place in the Valhalla of Philippi ne Immortals. Acclaimed as one of Asia's great freedom fighters, his memory is revered by his countrymen and he is oftentimes referred to as "The Great Malayan ." Bo m in Calamba, Laguna Province, of mlddJe class parents on June 19, 1861, Dr. Rizal stands as a lofty example of the unnegotiable character of a man's yeaming for freedom. A man of prodigious leamlng, he mastered the classical disciplines of medicine, ph ilosophy, nat lral and social sciences, languages, poetry, painting and sculpture and devoted his bou ,1dl es s intellectual genius to the struggle of his people against the oppr~cs ive Spanish colonial rule. He inculcated in his countryrnen the virtue and value of education as a stepping stone. to the attainment of political freedom. He worked with matchless fervor to emancipate his people from their disastrous sloth bom of ignorance, indolence. and disunity and led the way to national solidarity. In his two immortal novels, Noli Me Tangere and Filibusteri.smo, he articulated the crying need for massive, widespread reforms and thereby set the torch to the Filipino m ovement against Spain. He died a martyr before an execution squad at the historic 8agumbayan Field (Luneta), Manila on December 30. 1896. His life, works, and death have left a legacy that h as been a continuing source of inspiration for his people. Taken from Rizal in Japan. by Lunusa & Zaide

With this ceremony, the pride of Filipinos in their national hero has brought Dr. Jose P. Rizal Park in Seattle to full completion. At last, the natural beauty of the park, reminiscent of the beauty of our nation, has been augmented by a tangible representation of Dr. Rizal. This park is truly a fitting tribute to Dr. Rizal, for it shows the Filipino adherance to excellence. His spirit lives on, epitomized by the hard work and dedication of Mr. E. V. Vic Bacho and the other officers and members of the Dr. Jose P. Rizal Bridge & Park Preservation Society and all those who have made today's occasion a reality. Let us hope that this tradition of excellence continues, and that the next generation of Filipinos in this area inherits the Filipino heritage which has made our nation great.

Dear Friends: On behalf of the people of Seattle, I congratulate you on your successful efforts in the development of Jose Rizal Park. The dedication of the statue of Dr. Rizal highlight s this accomplishment. The livability and vitality of Seattle are directly reflected by the diversity of our communities and the rich cultural heritage of our citizens. Filipinos comprise the largest Asian/Pacific ethnic group in not only our area, but the entire nation. Members of the Filipino community have contributed greatly to the social, cultural, political, and economic vigor of this city. Without your accomplishments Seattle would not be the same great city that it is. Rizal Park and this statue will honor not only the memory of Dr. Rizal, but the many contributions Filipinos have made to Seattle, the United States, and the cause of freedom worldwide. Sincerely,

An equal employment opportunity· affirmative action employer.
