Week 1 Discussion Topic Option 2

After completing the review of Chapter 3 of Introduction to Healthcare,

I feel that several historical events stand out as important in shaping modern healthcare. First, in the 19th century, the work of Louis Pasteur and other scientists led to the development of germ theory. This discovery showed that microorganisms cause disease, which changed how healthcare providers approached sanitation and hygiene. As a result, practices such as sterilization and infection control became more common and remain in use today (Haroun et al., 2025). Second, the development of vaccines, beginning with Edward Jenner’s smallpox vaccine, made a major impact on public health. Vaccines help prevent the spread of serious diseases and have lowered death rates over time. Because of this, they remain among the most effective ways to protect patients and communities (Haroun et al., 2025). Finally, the discovery of antibiotics, such as penicillin, changed the way bacterial infections are treated. Before antibiotics, many infections could become life-threatening, but these medications made it possible for doctors to treat them more successfully. This advancement greatly improved patient outcomes and survival rates (Haroun et al., 2025). Overall, these events have helped improve life expectancy and the quality of healthcare. Healthcare continues to evolve today with new technologies such as telehealth and electronic health records (EHRs). Even
