WHEN TECHNOLOGY & HUMANITY CROSS: Significance
of Technological Advancements
No one can escape the absolute necessity of technology
in our daily lives. Each of us is so heavily dependent on
technology that we cannot do anything easily without it.
Technology is important because it is used in all areas of
life.
When you contemplate your daily routine and count all
the technology gadgets you consume in just one day,
you will realize how important technology is when you
use your mobile phone, watch TV, and use a computer
or any electrical machine.
In fact, day after day is increasing depending on
technology whether during communication or
transportation or search for any information or even
entertainment.
Humans have also reached the moon with the
revolution in space technology. Technology can not only
help with the present but also bring the future closer.
Hence, technology is undeniably important in our lives.
Technological advances in communication have become
endless. Technology is of great importance in terms of
facilitating communication between people, as it has
contributed effectively to making the big world look like
a small village.
Technology provides the possibility of communication
between many parties in different regions of the world
very quickly, which helps them to spread, both in the
dissemination of information and various news or in the
sharing of knowledge and science.
TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS THAT ARE USED FOR
COMMUNICATIONS & ENTERTAINMENT
MOBILE PHONES
More than half of the Filipino population own at least
one mobile phone regardless of type. 67% mobile
phone ownership in PH (Synovate, 2010)
Among young Filipinos, it is considered a must have
(ABS-CBN News, 2010)
One in three Filipinos cannot live without mobile
phones (Ipsos Media Atlas Philippines Nationwide

MOBILE PHONE HISTORY

MARTIN COOPER

 A senior engineer at Motorola  Made the first mobile phone call on April 3, 1973 to their rival telecommunications company  The mobile phone used weighed 1.1 kilograms and measured 228.6 x 127 x 44.4 mm. The device was capable of 30-minute talk time but took 10 hours to charge  In 1983, Motorola DynaTAC 8000x available to the public as the first commercial mobile phone. COMPUTERS AND LAPTOPS There are some Filipino families who own more than one computer or laptop. Low sales compared to TV and phones due to relatively higher cost. Most of the profits come from offices, businesses and schools. In 2010, 3.6 trillion was the estimated total value output of all manufacturing establishments, 5.4% came from computers and peripheral equipment and accessories. (PSA, 2013) A typical household owns at least four of the following devices: (Phil Star, 2013)  Smartphone (53%)  Tablet (14%)  Desktop (39%)  Laptop or Notebook (37%)  Smart TV (4%) ROLES PLAYED BY THESE TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS TELEVISIONS  Platform for advertisements and information dissemination  Recreational activity and good stress reliever to most families  Good platform for different propagandas and advocacies  Good way for family bonding MOBILE PHONES  Primarily used for communications  Used to surf the internet  Used to take pictures PERSONAL COMPUTERS OR LAPTOPS  Can be used to surf the internet and communicate.  Has a wider keyboard, screens and the availability of a mouse or touchpad, making them easier to maneuver?  Can play different games with comfort and convenience ETHICAL DILEMMA FACED BY THESE TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS MOST PARENTS ARGUE THAT THESE DEVICES MAKE THEIR CHILDREN LAZY AND UNHEALTHY People who are hooked on these technological advancements have a higher tendency to lay around their homes and are less likely to engage in physical activity. BLAME : THE USERS OF DEVICE It is assumed that those working in the scientific community have properly informed the general public of both the potential benefits and the potential risks associated with the use of these devices. CHILDREN WHO ARE NOT YET CAPABLE OF RATIONALLY DECIDING FOR THEMSELVES ARE FREELY EXPOSED TO DIFFERENT THINGS ON THESE TECHNOLOGIES Children may simply search the web and visit various websites without restrictions. These enable them to view, read, or hear content that is inappropriate for their young age. BLAME: ADULTS WHO ALLOW CHILDREN TO USE THOSE DEVICES The scientific world nor the children are blameworthy because:  Children are not yet capable of making rational decisions  Even if the inventors of these technologies made an effort to educate kids about these devices, it would be ineffective since kids are not yet able to understand it well

DESIRE (Deutsche Service robotik Initiative)  A collaborative project sponsored by  the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research’s Service  Robotics Innovation Lead Initiative launched on October 1, 2005Individualobjectives (DESIRE,2009)  To achieve a technological edge toward attaining key functions and components that are suited for everyday use  To create a reference architecture for mobile manipulation  To promote the convergence of technologies through integration into a common technology platform  To conduct pre-competition research and development activities for new products and technology transfer in start-up Enterprises in the field of Service robotics Role played robotics  Used to ease the workload of mankind  Perform complicated activities which human beings are Incapable Of doing  Perform simple tasks so that their masters can focus note complex ones  Entertainment or toys LAWS OF ROBOTS Isaac asimov,1940's Law One - A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. Law Two - A robot must obey the orders given it by the human being except where such orders would conflict with theirs Law. Law Three - A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law ETHICAL DILEMMAS FACEDBY ROBOTICS.  Safety  Emotional component  Partial autonomy  Full autonomy
