As technology continues to advance over time, wireless connectivity provides a more convenient option to ensure all devices in a given setting are connected to the internet. Today, there are many devices we use that require internet capability for proper functionality such as: smartphones, tablets, streaming hardware, and other mobile devices. According Webopedia (2006) wireless networks use radio frequency technology (RF) and computers must have network adapters installed to connect to an access point. Network adapters typically come installed on the computer however, add-on adapters are available if the system does not come pre-equipped. Network security protocols Wireless networks are often accessed by multiple users and devices at a time and therefore require security protocols to ensure information is protected. Additionally, security protocols ensure the integrity of data as it is transmitted over a wireless connection. The ‘Secure Sockets Layer” (SSL) protocol provides data encryption and origin authentication to safeguard sensitive data and maintain a secure internet connection (IBM,2020). According to IBM (2020) the “Transport Layer Security” (TLS) protects data while being transferred by providing privacy and message authentication for data being transmitted through the FTP control. VPN’s (virtual private networks) can also be used to securely transmit data by creating a secure remote point which can only be accessed through authentication. VPN’s are used for same or business-to- business communication. Network Security and Management Tools

To further secure the network, a wall can be built between the organizations internal network and outside networks that filters data before forwarding. This wall is also referred to as a “Firewall”, and essentially blocks unsafe data from reaching the internal network. Firewalls are installed separate from the rest of the network to further protect the private network resource. If the firewall is installed properly it should protect each system from the other and will deny any requests that do not meet the specified criteria. As discussed earlier, IDS’s are an additional security layer that monitors and analyzes all incoming and outgoing network activity. There are many types of IDS’s but the NIDS (Network Intrusion Detection System) detects attacks by monitoring multiple hostsand analyzing incoming network traffic. Network intrusion detection systems can access the network traffic information via a hub or network switch. Network administration tools Network monitoring is being implemented throughout the technology industry and helps to combat attacks before they reach the host and gain access to sensitive data. Today, many network monitoring tools and services exists making it easier to track and analyze data. SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is a wide-ranging network monitoring tool that comes equipped with dashboard capability for easier visibility to activity. The SolarWinds performance tool can automatically detect all devices connected to the network (Keary, 2020). The Paessler PRTG Network Monitor is another performance monitoring tool that scans the network intermittently to discover newly added devices to monitor. The PRTG monitor comes equipped with a customizable dashboard with reporting capability and real-time network maps production. References
