1. Summary of act 3.
The act starts in Cyprus, Cassio sends musicians to serenade Othello and Desdemona, but Othello dislike the music and send a clown to pay them. Cassio asks the clown to give a message to Emilia in order to make Desdemon intercede with Othello and him.
The next scene Othello have to face military matters and wants to inspect the fortifications of the town.
The last scene, places us in a converstation between Cassio, Desdemona and Emilia, assuring him that Othello and him will reconcile their relationship. When Othello and Iago return, Cassio leaves the place full of shame and Iago takes advantage of the situation in order to suggest another significance to Cassio´s leave. Iago empoison Othello´s mind but he demand an ocular proof, and that is Desdemona´s handkerchief.
2. Comment on the setting of Othello.
When he sees Cassio leaving in a rush Desdemona and Emilia, he didn´t suspect of him but Iago used the situation to cloud his mind. At the beginning, Othello refuses to believe that his best man is deceiving him, but the words of Iago, finally convince him that something strange was happening. At the end, regardless de situation, he convinced of Cassio´s honestly, ordered Iago an ocular proof, and Iago satisfied him with the redundant proof of Desdemona´s handkerchief.
3. What is, in your opinion, the aim of the dialogue between the clown and the musician at the beginning of scene 1? What do they mean when they say “tail” and “instruments”?
The negative of Othello to Cassio´s efforts in order to peace with him, Othello doesn’t want to speak with him so he send the clown.
It could be a metaphor to refer to the anus, meaning that the musician are playing flatulence.
4. Comment: “I never knew a Florentine more kind and honest”.
This are Cassio´s words to refer to Iago´s help in order to get Othello´s pardon, even though Iago is trying to get the opposite result.
5. Comment on: “I like not that”.
These are Iago´s words in the beginning of his plan to empoison Othello´s mind, he wants to make understand that the one who run away from their coming is not Cassio but wanting to make the opposite effect.
6. Comment: “No, sure, I cannot think it that he would sneak away so guilty-like seeing your coming”.
Here, Iago wants to make Cassio seems like a guilty who is running from the scene of crime, when the hero arrives.
7. Comment: “Excellent wretch! Perdition catch my soul but I do love thee! And when I love thee not, Chaos is come again”.
Othello expresses his love and thanks to Desdemona for leaving him alone. In this words he demonstrates that if he has not her with him his life is chaos and she is the light of his darkness.
8. Comment: “For such things in a false disloyal knave, are tricks of custom; but in a man that´s just, they´re close dilations, working from the heart, that passion cannot rule”.
Othello wants to mean that the supposed behaviour of Cassio is due to an uncontrollable passion, of contrary it would be the behaviour of a knave. Othello has Cassio in good steem and he wants to believe that is a problem of uncontrollable passion.
9. Comment: “She did deceive her father, marrying youl”.
Iago is empoisoning Othello´s mind with this words meaning that Desdemona is deceiving him and having an affair with Cassio. The obvious reason: she once deceive her father to get married with Othello. Iago doesn’t lose the chance to cloud the mind of Othello with his own acts.
10. Comment: “I hope you will consider what is spoke comes from my love”.
Here, Iago is convincing Othello that the things he is saying about Desdemona and Cassio are only said for the own sake of Othello, and the main cause of it, is for the love, respect and appreciation that Iago has on Othello.
11. Comment: “I do not think but Desdemona´s honest”.
After Iago´s words, Othello seems to be moved but he denies it because he trust in Desdemona´s honesty.
12. Comment: “Why did I marry? This honest creature doubtless sees and knows more, much more than he unfolds”.
Othello is frustrated because he cannot see what Iago, and possibly, everybody see, his wife is deceiving him and he has not realized of it.
