-SHORT ANSWERS
Yes, I have / No, I haven't // Yes, he has / No, he hasn't
CAREFUL!
*If we specify WHEN the action happened, then we should use PAST SIMPLE.
Remember some time expressions when using Past Simple: Yesterday, Last day, Last week,
Last month,two years ago,“in 1945”...
*Remember that“´s” means “has“ and not “is; and “´ve” means “have”.
2. PRESENT PERFECT with “ALREADY / STILL / YET”
– We use “already” to say that something happened before it was expected. (Usamos
“already” para decir que ya ha ocurrido algo, antes de lo esperado)
Example:
“John has already finished his homework.” → “John ya ha terminado sus deberes. “
-We use “still” and “yet” to reinforce the idea that something hasn't changed. It is used in
negative sentences and it comes before “has/have”. (Signficado de “aún/todavía”).

1. PRESENT PERFECT

  • USE: To talk about experiences we had in our lives. Time is not specified.
  • STRUCTURE: (+) Subject + have/has + verb in past participle (3rd column if irregular verb, past simple ending in -ed, -d, -ied if it´s regular). Example: “I have been to China” (Yo he estado en China).

(?) Have / Has + subject + verb in participle + … +? Example: “Have you been to China?” (¿Has estado en China?) “Have you ever been to China?” (¿Alguna vez has estado en China?)

  • SHORT ANSWERS Yes, I have / No, I haven't // Yes, he has / No, he hasn't

CAREFUL!

*If we specify WHEN the action happened, then we should use PAST SIMPLE. Remember some time expressions when using Past Simple: Yesterday, Last day, Last week, Last month, two years ago,“in 1945”...

*Remember that“´s” means “has“ and not “is; and “´ve” means “have”.

2. PRESENT PERFECT with “ALREADY / STILL / YET”

  • We use “already” to say that something happened before it was expected. (Usamos “already” para decir que ya ha ocurrido algo, antes de lo esperado) Example: “John has already finished his homework.” → “John ya ha terminado sus deberes. “
  • We use “still” and “yet” to reinforce the idea that something hasn't changed. It is used in negative sentences and it comes before “has/have”. (Signficado de “aún/todavía”).

Example: “Tim still hasn´t bought a suit for the party. (“Tim aún/todavía no ha comprado el traje para la fiesta.”)

  • We use “yet” to say that an expected activity has not happened. We usually use “yet” with questions and negative forms. (Usamos “yet” para decir que una acción que se esperaba que ocurriera aún no ha ocurrido. Lo usamos en preguntas y negaciones.) Example: “Mary hasn't arrived home yet.” → “Mary no ha llegado a casa aún.” “Has Mary arrived home yet?” → “¿Ha llegado Mary a casa ya?”

TIPS:

  • ‘ALREADY’ siempre va después de have o has
  • ‘STILL’ siempre va después del sujeto y antes de hasn´t o haven´t.
  • ‘YET’ siempre va al final de la oración. If we want to specify the time we did the action in the past, we use PAST SIMPLE. (Si queremos especificar el tiempo en que hicimos la acción, usamos PAST SIMPLE = 2º COLUMNA VERBOS).

3. PRESENT PERFECT WITH FOR AND SINCE.

  • FOR → DURANTE + Lenght of time (Duración del tiempo de la acción)
  • SINCE → DESDE + Time when the action started (El tiempo, la fecha, en la que empezó la acción). USE: They describe the duration of an action or event which started in the past and continues in the present. (Describen la duración de la acción que empezó en el pasado y continúa en el presente).

EXAMPLES:

“Sarah has had the same smartphone for three years” (Sarah ha tenido el mismo móvil durante tres años. // Significa que sigue teniéndolo además.)

“We have lived in this house since 1995” (Hemos vivido en esta casa desde 1995 // Significa además que seguimos viviendo en ella.)
