Adjectives are words we use to describe the reality around us, including both tangible (=concrete) things and abstract concepts.

Mainly, we can use adjectives to describe:

OBJECTS > some dirty clothes PEOPLE > a clever student PLACES > an interesting city FEELINGS / STATES > I’m really hungry NOTIONS / CONCEPTS > a good idea

However, we can use specific adverbs, called intensifiers, in order to change the intensity of these base adjectives and make them stronger in meaning.

The most commonly used intensifiers in everyday writing and conversation are very and really :

very big very hot really funny really interesting

Certain adjectives, however, have this idea of ‘very’ or ‘intensity’ on their own. Therefore, they don’t need any intensifiers to make their meaning stronger… They are already strong themselves!
