Pre-tasks
When you have finished, share one thing that you have learnt from these resources (e.g. vocabulary, expressions or grammar) to the I have learnt something today folder in the Forum.
Task 1
Overview Task type To do Where Length % CA mark Group Speaking Skype 15 mins 40
In your Skype conversation the required language focus (next page) is on the naturalness of spoken interaction with your group members. You will need to:
See Appendix 1: Organising the activity for more information.
1. Make a decision about who will record.
Decide who will record the conversation (we recommend that at least two people do so if possible). You should record your conversation directly in Skype.
2. Identify yourself clearly throughout the Skype call.
You should introduce yourself clearly at the beginning of the call and use your partners’ names as much as possible during the conversation, so that the teacher can identify who is speaking when he/she listens to the recording of your conversation.
3. Record the Skype call and submit the file.
The person in charge of sending the Skype conversation should check the sound quality of the audio file and then send it to the CA6 Skype folder in the class GDrive. The file should be labelled with CA6 + group name (e.g. CA6 Liverpool ). Paste the link to your GDrive file into a message in the CA6 Skype folder in the Forum. You should include the names of the fictional characters you decided to invite to the meal in the body of your message. For an overview of how to submit your file, please see Appendix 2.
See Appendix 3: Skype call — General information for more information.
This task focuses on group interaction , so you should aim to initiate and respond to others in a natural way. You will also need to pay attention to your fluency, intelligibility (pronunciation and intonation) and natural features of speaking such as appropriate pauses and re-phrasing.
Please see Assessment and Feedback in the classroom.
Appendix 1: Skype call — Organising the activity
How to organise the activity:
Before your discussion
In your Discussion area in the Group work space you should send a message to your groupmates and say which two fictional characters you would like to invite to your dinner party.
Connect in Skype
1.Choose your guests Unfortunately, there isn’t enough room to invite all the characters, so as a group you have to choose the final guest list. A maximum of three / four fictional guests can attend the party along with your group. Argue for your own choices and then together decide which characters you will / will not invite. The criteria could include which group makes the best mix, who would get along with whom, which guests might not get along, if there should be a balance of men and women, if there is a big age gap, etc.
2.Decide on the food Once you have decided on the guest list, you then need to decide the most appropriate type of meal — posh restaurant / picnic / fast food / barbeque / take-away / lunch / brunch / etc. and suggest some things that would be on the menu. For example, fictional characters such as Dracula may enjoy a Bloody Mary cocktail to start their meal or Popeye might appreciate some spinach!
3.Decide on an after meal activity Finally, decide as a group on an activity you can do after the meal — go to a club/go to the theatre, etc.
Appendix 2: Submitting your file
Once finished, please follow these procedures to submit your work:
● Name your file with CA6 + your group name.
In GDrive
● Upload the file to GDrive. Your teacher will send a message to the Noticeboard letting you know exactly where you should upload the file. ● Open your file and copy the URL at the top.
In Forum
● Go to the class Forum and create a new message in the folder CA6 Skype , adding your group name in the subject line. ● Paste the URL link to your GDrive file in the body of the message. ● Once you have posted your message, open it and check that the link to your GDrive file works.
