READING Skill Identifying topics and main ideas Every paragraph has a topic and a main idea The topic is usually one or two words ( El tema ) To identify the topic, ask the question : What is this paragraph about?. Example : My brother, John, is very popular. Everyone likes him. Why? For one thing, he is very outgoing. He laughs a lot and he tells jokes. In this paragraph, the topic is “ my brother ”. The topic repeats in the paragraph. The main idea is usually a short sentence. ( Idea principal del párrafo ) To identify the main idea , ask the question “ What is the most important idea in this paragraph? Example : In the paragraph above, the main idea is “ My brother, John, is very popular ”. The other sentences in the paragraph explain this idea. WRITING Skill Writing simple sentences (oraciones) A sentence in English needs a subject. (sujeto) The subject performs the action. Usually the subject comes at the beginning of the sentence. The subject is a noun (sustantivo) or pronoun (pronombre). Examples: Tom goes to school. Danah likes basketball. She is good at math. A sentence can have more than one subject. Use the word and with two subjects. Examples: John and Salim are from Ottawa. John and Mary enjoy sports. A sentence also needs a verb. The verb is a word that describes the action. Examples: Akiko eats lunch everyday. Cristiano Ronaldo plays soccer. The students relax on their vacation. .
