SENTENCES

A conditional sentence consists of two parts:

If- clause + Main clause

Example:

If it rains tomorrow, we will not come.

If- clause Main clause

SECOND CONDITIONAL For improbable

or imaginary conditions

If I won the prize, I would give all the money to

an environmental charity.

She would probably live in a palace if she were

a princess.

If I were you, I would tell my mum the whole

truth.

If- clause Simple past (Unreal Past)

Main clause Simple Conditional

(WOULD(N’T) + INFINITIVE)

Very often using the FIRST or the SECOND

CONDITONAL depends on how likely we consider the

condition to be met.

If I pass my driving test,... / If I passed my driving test, …

  • probable - probable

THIRD CONDITIONAL For past

hypotheses

Past situation: Sarah missed the bus because she got up late.

If Sarah had got up earlier, she wouldn’t have missed the bus.

If- clause Past Perfect Main clause Perfect Conditional (WOULD + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE)

In the 2nd Cond. ➜ Simple Conditional

He would go

In the 3rd Cond. ➜ Perfect Conditional

He would have gone
