The Black Falcon – The Robot Doctor

While studying engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Akhil Madhani first saw

robots in action and was impressed by their huge potential. He considered the possibility of

replacing people with robots in difficult and dangerous situations such as when security forces

dismantle explosive devices without endangering lives or causing injuries.

Madhani was born in 1968 in Nairobi, Kenya. His father, an orthopaedic surgeon, and his mother, a

gynaecologist, are of Indian origin. The family emigrated to the United States and settled in Seattle,

Washington, when Madhani was two years old.

If his father had not been a surgeon, the idea of using robot technology in surgeries could have

never occurred to Akhil. He watched his father as he performed minimally invasive surgery, which

allows doctors to reduce the impact of their work inside the patient’s body by using advanced

technology manually controlled.

Akhil Madhani had the idea of using computerized, remote-controlled robots instead of non-

computarised instruments. He invented the Falcon Robot , a long thin arm, with a metal articulated

part and two tiny mechanical fingers at the end. The surgeon operates the small hand using a

joystick. The tiny robot’s fingers are more versatile than human fingers, so they can perform

complex and delicate surgical procedures.

Because it is so small, the Falcon can actually go inside the patient accessing the part of the body to

be operated on. The incision itself is tiny, which minimises the shock to the body and the duration

of the surgery. The Falcon can make any kind of surgeries easier, but its most important application

is in the heart operations because it can enter between the ribs. It also has another advantage. Giving

commands to a robot requires far less effort than actually carrying a procedure. It is less exhausting

for a surgeon and so eliminates much of the risk of human error – mistakes can easily be made

when you are tired.

The scientific world has already recognised its enormous potential and Akhil has been awarded

prestigious prizes for his invention.

Task A Circle T for true and F for false. Correct the false statement/s on the blank lines below.

1 Mahdani had the idea of using computerized, remote-controlled robots in demanding surgeries because his father was a surgeon and he was familiar with the topic.

T F

2 Operating computerized, remote-controlled robots instead of non-computarised instruments is much more stressful and tiring for surgeons.

T F

3 The use of the^ Falcon^ greatly^ reduces the number of mistakes that can occur during surgery.
