Interaction 1 Someone from a different country
To make sure your interview allows you to explore deeper elements of culture, go
over the three layers of the cultural iceberg and the 8 aspects of the identity
seen in class. Then, answer the questions provided below and submit the answers in
your document.
Questions for personal interactions:
Interaction 1 Someone from a different country:
Which of the three layers of the cultural iceberg does my interaction belong
to? Second and third layer.
Explain which elements allow you to place it in this layer.
Beliefs and Values (Third Layer): The interviewee discusses beliefs and values
related to healthcare, such as the belief that healthcare is a right and the value of
equitable access to healthcare services. These beliefs and values are deeply rooted
in her perspective and are fundamental to her understanding of the health situation
in both Mexico and Venezuela.
Norms, Assumptions, and Unspoken Rules (Third Layer): Maria also addresses
norms around healthcare, particularly the role of government and its impact on the
healthcare system. These are beliefs that guide her perception of inequality in health
care and the role of institutions in addressing the problem.
Personal experiences and perspectives (second layer): She shared personal
experiences about healthcare access and affordability, linking them to her cultural
identity as a Venezuelan. These experiences provide insight into how cultural
elements influence her views on healthcare in Mexico.
Identify which aspects of your interviewee’s identity are different from yours.
Compared to Maria, her identity is shaped by being Venezuelan and experiencing
the health system and challenges in her country. Her perspective is influenced by the
cultural and social context of Venezuela, including the health system and the impact
of the government's role.
Overall, her perspective is deeply rooted in her cultural identity as a Venezuelan and
her personal experiences and beliefs about her, which are shaped by the cultural
context and health system of Venezuela.

The second interaction must be with someone from a different country who has a different cultural background than yours. The more elements of identity that your interviewee has different than yours, the better. (maximum 8 elements, minimum 4). Aspects of identity: Nationality: Nationality can change perspectives on healthcare systems. Being of different nationalities (Mexican and Venezuelan), our experiences with the health systems in our respective countries can vary significantly due to different policies, resources, and approaches to care. Socioeconomic class: My financial position may influence the availability and quality of medical care to which I have had access. Being of a different socioeconomic class, Maria may have experienced healthcare challenges and opportunities unique to her home country. Ethnicity : Ethnicity can influence the relationship with health care due to cultural differences and traditions related to health and well-being. As we are of different ethnicities, our experiences and perceptions may vary in terms of traditional health practices, cultural beliefs, and treatment approaches. Race: This can influence medical care through potential disparities in access and quality of health services. Although in the Latin American context, racial differences are often understood differently than in other parts of the world, there may still be stigmas or unique experiences related to race that influence our perception of healthcare. Cultural expressions Mexico

inequality. It is argued that the United States should invest more in social policies to address inequality in health care and improve population health. After seeing these images, Maria commented the following: "I think that these photos are correct and demonstrate in a very good way the difference in the health systems in the three different countries." After your interactions

1. In which ways are your perspectives similar and/or different? My perspective and Maria´s (Venezuelan interviewee) align in recognizing the challenges of healthcare accessibility and affordability for low-income individuals in Mexico and Venezuela. You can see that both emphasize the need for improved healthcare systems and equitable access. 2. Did your perspective on the topic expand, change or become richer after interacting with others? How so? I believe that interacting with her really enriched my understanding of healthcare struggles in another country, by understanding and opening my horizons more about the common problems of the health system. 3. Which role does culture play in having different perspectives on the issue? Culture has a large impact on perspectives and shapes beliefs about healthcare as a fundamental right, because it informs how healthcare is valued and accessed, impacting people´s views on the role of government and social responsibility. 4. Based on the different perspectives you explored, why is it relevant to be empathetic towards other perspectives? Empathy is relevant because it has to do with understanding and promotes collaborative solutions that consider needs and contexts. This is helpful in developing policies that can effectively address healthcare disparities. 5. How does the analysis and understanding of multiple perspectives on the topic have an impact on a global level? Analyzing multiple perspectives at a global level makes it easier to identify common challenges and possible solutions applicable across borders. I realized that it promotes the development of international initiatives for better health outcomes.

6. What were some challenges you faced for better understanding others' points of view? I do not consider that I had challenges since in the interview I was willing to have active listening, cultural sensitivity, and an open mind to capture the depth of his perspective, which was the same as mine.
