Summary

“Heewon-ssi, I don’t think I can go on. How much longer should I keep living like this? Yoo Joonghyuk has forgotten not only me, but also his own daughter. I don’t think our marriage is still worth fighting for.”

“Dokja-ssi, I know it’s a big thing to ask, but if you can, please hang in there a little longer. Think about Biyoo’s future,” Heewon chose her words carefully, “you know how hard it'll be for her if she loses her Dad. Don’t ruin her dreams.”

Kim Dokja stared at her angrily. What did she mean? Ruining his child’s dream as if he wanted that? “If you must know, in the end, it would be Yoo Joonghyuk himself who would end her dreams. Don’t talk to me like I’m at fault here, Heewon-ssi .”

Yes. To keep living every day with a man he could see very clearly now that man did not love him anymore. He was exiled from that man’s world, alone, lost, friendless. He could not do it anymore, it was too much to ask, too much for him to give. He would never have married Yoo Joonghyuk had he known this gargantuan condition. He had wept many tears, he felt he had been robbed of everything he once possessed in his life.

IT IS TIME TO REWRITE THIS SAD STORY.

Yoo Joonghyuk looked at his phone furiously, he was in the middle of his meeting, yet his phone had been buzzing for several times now. He did try to reject the call, but it kept coming in again and again, leaving him no choice other than stepping out of the conference room to take it.

He gazed at the caller ID just before he pressed the green button. It was from his spouse, Kim Dokja. He sighed. “What now? Do you know I’m in the middle of an important meeting?”

“CEO Yoo Joonghyuk,” Kim Dokja’s voice hit his ear, “I’m terribly sorry if I’ve disturbed your precious time. Did you forget to pick up Biyoo? Her teacher just called me, she’s the only kid left in the school, and she’s been waiting for you for more than one hour.”

Yoo Joonghyuk glanced at his watch in astonishment. He completely forgot about the time. Not that he did it on purpose. Now he felt guilty. “I’m sorry. I— totally forgot about the time. There’s an urgent issue that needs to be settled immediately here, so the meeting was really unplanned, Dokja- yah .”

“You and your excuses. Your meeting is so important that you forgot your own child. How could you? Even if you cannot make it, at least you could’ve just called me. I’ll take a cab or anything else. Where’s your reliable secretary then? Is she not available to take care of your matters? Or perhaps, it is the other way around so far? Perhaps you’re too busy taking care of her that you forgot your own daughter.”

“Kim Dokja, look, I’m really sorry, but you don’t have to mention her in this matter.” Yoo Joonghyuk answered in a cold voice.

“You know what? Never mind.” Kim Dokja cut him off. “It’s not your fault. It’s mine for thinking that I could rely on you, so yeah, forget it. I would never trust you anymore.”

The call ended. Yoo Joonghyuk leaned back and closed his eyes. What a great day.

“Are you okay?”

Cautiously, he opened his eyes back and saw a beautiful young woman standing right in front of him. Her blonde hair was flowing freely behind her as she handed him a piece of paper and a pen.

“Yes.” He answered shortly, eyes started reading the paper in his hand. “The meeting was fine?”

“It’s fine,” Anna Croft shot a bright smile. “They’re finishing anyway. Everything is settled, they just need your sign to proceed with the idea. Your idea.”

“Hope I didn’t cause any trouble when I left them moments ago.”

“No, not at all. Actually I’m kind of happy you did. It shortened the meeting.” She chuckled. “Anyway, when you gave your idea, I instantly knew that’s the answer we’ve been looking for. So don’t worry. I handled the rest for you already.”

“I’m glad I have you as my secretary, Anna.” Yoo Joonghyuk smiled. “I don’t know what to do if you’re not beside me.”

“Does this mean our date tonight is still on?” She beamed. “Please don’t cancel it anymore. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity to be with you for a long time. I miss being only the two of us. Please?”

“Of course,” Yoo Joonghyuk reached for her hand and kissed the soft knuckles. “I’ll do anything to make you happy.”

A hot session with Anna apparently was all he needed to free himself from that miserable day. He ended up not coming home that night. It was not new anymore, lately he felt like he did not belong to his home anymore, certainly not with Kim Dokja there. Frankly, he did not know what went wrong with their marriage, or maybe it should not have happened from the beginning anyway. They were doing just fine in the first year of their marriage, and he honestly thought with Biyoo’s presence, things would get way better. But he was wrong.

Yoo Joonghyuk took a deep breath and looked to his side where Anna was already sleeping soundly. He could not sleep yet. He predicted Kim Dokja would scream at him in the next morning for not telling him where he was and why he did not come home. But honestly, he did not care. He needed this. He would deal with Kim Dokja later when he met him. Yoo Joonghyuk lowered himself into the blanket and hugged the sleeping woman beside him. For now, he just wanted to sleep in peace.

When Yoo Joonghyuk arrived at his office, he turned on his phone and checked it. It was flashing with new messages — about ten texts and twenty emails — mostly about his work, but strangely none from Kim Dokja. He stared at them with an odd feeling. That was indeed the first time Kim Dokja did not call him or message him to question his whereabouts. The office itself looked empty today, because it was on the weekend. He knew he should just have

The call was over hours ago, still he found himself sitting alone at his huge office desk, staring blankly at the wooden name plate with his name engraved gorgeously in italic words. He heaved a sigh. He found it hard even to begin to know what he felt. The days with Kim Dokja had been crumbling and it was surely going to an end soon. He knew that, and so did Kim Dokja. But how to tell this to Biyoo?

“I’m so sorry, Biyoo- yah .”

Kim Dokja sat in the mess, staring out to a sea of people out there from the glass window, behind him, lawyers were whooping, trying to share their frustration perhaps, and a moment later, all that noise was fading as Jung Heewon pulled close the door of her office, disconnecting them from those roaring people.

“Sorry about that, Dokja- ssi ,” Heewon joined him at her desk, spreading some folders before the man, “hope you don’t mind waiting.”

“It’s okay, Heewon- ssi , I understand. You must be very busy.”

“The firm is in the middle of a big case. I think you must’ve heard it also. I cannot find a single newspaper who doesn’t talk about this case.”

Kim Dokja smiled. Perhaps, he knew, but it did not matter to him. He was here for something else, and it was for his personal issue.

“About your case,” Heewon said, “have you thought about it thoroughly? I mean, what would happen if you decided to end everything between you and Yoo Joonghyuk- ssi ?”

“Heewon- ssi , like I’ve once told you, I don’t think I can go on anymore. How much longer should I keep living like this? Yoo Joonghyuk has forgotten not only me, but also his own daughter. I don’t think our marriage is still worth fighting for.”

“Dokja- ssi , I’m sorry, I know it’s a big thing to ask, but if you can, please hang in there a little longer. I mean, think about Biyoo’s future,” Heewon spoke slowly as she chose her words carefully, “you know how hard it will be for her if she loses her Dad. Don’t ruin her dreams.”

Kim Dokja stared at her angrily now. What did she mean? Ruining his child’s dream as if he wanted that? “If you must know, in the end, it would be Yoo Joonghyuk himself who would end her dreams. Don’t talk to me like I’m at fault here, Heewon- ssi .”

“I apologise if my words offended you. I just want the best for you and your child, Dokja- ssi , and sometimes, a divorce is not always the right way out. And it’s my duty, not only as your friend, but as your lawyer also, to remind you and help you to consider all the consequences in the future. Please, Dokja- ssi , I don’t mean to hurt you.”

“I know, Heewon- ssi. If you think I didn’t think about it well, I did. I’ve been there myself, and do you really think I want the same thing to happen to my own daughter?” Kim Dokja’s voice was trembling with agony. How could Heewon think he was not thinking what was best for him and his child? “Have you ever thought about me then? He’s having his affair out there, Heewon- ssi , and you have no idea how it hurts me for years already.”

“I’m sorry, Dokja- yah , you’re right. I— am just worried about Biyoo. That’s all. But I should’ve thought about you also. I understand. I’ll proceed with the legal matters if that’s your final decision.”

Kim Dokja did not say a word afterwards as he stood up and fled out of the room and left. Yes. It had to end soon. Both he and Yoo Joonghyuk knew about this anyway.

“I’m sorry, Biyoo- yah .”

Biyoo was drawing with her crayons when Yoo Joonghyuk came into her bedroom. It was something she always enjoyed when she had done her homework and her Appa needed some time to clean the house.

“Hey,” Yoo Joonghyuk called her softly. “Busy?”

The little girl lifted her face and beamed, looking at her Dad that she had missed so much. “Dad!” She placed down her crayon and stood up to hug him. “You’re here. When did you arrive?”

“Just now. Where’s your Appa ?”

Kim Dokja stopped whatever he was doing abruptly. Indeed, his mother had died two years ago, yet— “It’s her birthday tomorrow. I plan to pay her respect with Biyoo. Her birthday only happens once in a year, and I never missed it before, so I don’t want to miss it this year also. It’s okay. Just let me and Biyoo go. We’ll be just fine. You can make up with Biyoo next time, just take her to a restaurant, she’ll be happy. She just wants to spend some time with you.”

Still— the guilt was there.

“Is there something bothering you?” Anna waved at him. “You seem to be in a very deep thought.”

Helpless with guilt, Yoo Joonghyuk told her what happened, how he felt uneasy having to reject his daughter’s wish, but on the other hand, he did not want to disappoint Anna either. “It seems that I just can’t do anything right lately. I don’t really care about my relationship with Kim Dokja anymore. We know what’s going on between us anyway. We’re just waiting for the right moment to let it happen. But I feel bad for Biyoo. I love her genuinely and I hate to make her unhappy.”

“I understand,” said Anna. “How about you send a gift to her as a surprise? You can send Kim Dokja some things also, consider it as a thankful message for taking care of your daughter all this time.”

“Can I do that? I mean, you don’t mind?”

Anna chuckled. “Why would I mind? He’s still your legal spouse until you’re officially divorced. Anyway, you do need to separate in a good term eventually for the sake of your daughter in the future. Don’t you think so, Joonghyuk- ah ?”

Yoo Joonghyuk nodded. Anna was the embodiment of calm and common sense he could always depend on. “Will you help me to choose the presents?”

“I’m your Secretary, it’s actually part of my job description, so consider it done, CEO Yoo.” She said teasingly.

Kim Dokja was surprised to receive a big bouquet of white tulips and pink roses from a courier when he opened the door. He was about to leave for his mother’s mausoleum actually.

“Flowers for Kim Dokja?” The courier asked.

He was stunned for a moment before he could finally answer the man, “yes, I’m him. I’m Kim Dokja.”

“Please sign it here.” The man handed a letter of receipt which Dokja quickly signed before he returned it back.

“And here’s another thing,” the courier gave him another paper bag. Dokja could tell there was an oversized teddy bear inside since its big head popped out already.

“Thank you.”

Kim Dokja placed the bouquet and the paper bag on the table before he reached for a card and read the writings on it. [For Kim Dokja and Biyoo. Hope you’re happy with the gifts. From Yoo Joonghyuk.]

Truthfully, he did not know what to feel. Should he be happy? It was uncommon to receive such a gift from Yoo Joonghyuk, in fact, he did not remember the last time Yoo Joonghyuk sent him a present. Was it because Yoo Joonghyuk felt guilty for not being able to visit his mother’s mausoleum? Whatever it was, Kim Dokja knew he should thank the man anyway. It was indeed a beautiful bouquet, and Biyoo would surely be happy to get a present from his Dad.

He took out his phone and dialled Yoo Joonghyuk’s number. A second later, someone answered the call. “Joonghyuk- ah , thanks for the flower and the gift for Biyoo. I just got them. I appreciate it.”

There was a moment of silence before Kim Dokja heard a reply. But it was not Yoo Joonghyuk’s voice. It was a woman’s voice. “I’m glad you like it, Kim Dokja- ssi. I’ll send your message to Joonghyuk- ssi once he finishes his meeting.”

“Who’s this?”

“I’m his Secretary, Anna Croft. I’m sure you must’ve heard about me before.”

He did. He knew in an instant actually. Yoo Joonghyuk would never pass his phone to another person, unless— Now that he thought of it, Yoo Joonghyuk had never let him touch his phone at all. “Send my thanks to him then.”

“I will, Dokja- ssi. I’m glad you like them. I specially chose and ordered them for you.”

So it was not from Yoo Joonghyuk personally. He just had his hopes too high.

In the future, it was almost certain Anna would be Kim Dokja’s replacement, so might as well use this chance to create a good relationship before the time came.

“It’s okay, Dokja- yah , she can come with me. I’m sure Biyoo is a good girl, she won’t be troubling me at all. And we could have lunch together later, right, Biyoo- yah ?”

Biyoo beamed brightly, and Dokja knew he did not have the heart to disappoint her.

“Biyoo- yah ,” Yoo Joonghyuk called his daughter softly. They were still on their way to Yoo Joonghyuk’s office. The traffic was a little crowded today, so it took them longer to get to their destination. “I’ll be away for a while later for an appointment. When I’m not there, please spend some time with Anna- ssi , okay?”

“Who’s she?”

“She’s my Secretary. She’s kind and she knows about you. In fact, she’s very fond of you. You two can be good friends.”

“Is she beautiful?”

“Very. I'm sure you’ll like her.”

“Okay! I promise I’ll behave while you’re gone, Dad. But please also promise me that you’ll be back with me again soon!” She pouted.

Yoo Joonghyuk chuckled. Biyoo’s pouting face had never failed to make him laugh.

“I’ll be away for about two hours, I hope you don’t mind taking care of Biyoo, Anna- yah .” Yoo Joonghyuk smiled at his beautiful Secretary.

“Of course, I don’t. It’s my pleasure to be able to meet your precious daughter and spend some time with her. You’ll leave her with me, I’m sure we’ll have a good time together.”

“Hi, Biyoo- yah , nice to meet you.” Anna offered a hand to Biyoo. “I’m Anna.”

The little girl looked at her for a moment before she welcomed Anna’s hand.

“Your Appa must’ve told you about me, right? We’re going to have some fun while waiting for him to come back. Anything you have in mind?” Anna tried her best to make her voice as pleasant as possible.

“Umm… I don’t know, Unnie. But I’m a little hungry now. Can I try these cookies?” Biyoo pointed at some jars on the coffee table. “They look good.” She smiled at Anna.

“Sure,” Anna quickly got one of the jars and opened it. “Please have some.”

“What’s this?” Biyoo took one of the cookies.

“Almond cookies,” Anna answered. “It’s my favourite, and your Dad’s. That’s why we have them a lot here.”

“My Dad likes these?” Biyoo’s eyes grew rounder as if she just heard a magnificent fact about her Dad. “We never have this at home.”

“Oh, why not?” //No wonder Yoo Joonghyuk doesn’t like Kim Dokja. Kim Dokja can’t even appreciate what he likes.// “You should try some. It’s really good. Perhaps if you like it, your Appa would buy some for you and let you eat it at home.”

“I don’t think my Appa would permit me to eat this. My Appa said I’m allergic to nuts. Is almond a nut, too?”

Anna gave it a thought for a while. She was not sure either, but as far as she understood, almonds were never considered as a nut. And Biyoo would only try one anyway. Even if she was allergic to it, what harm could it be?

“I don’t think almonds are harmful. You could just try one, and drink plenty of water afterwards. I’m sure it’s going to be fine.”

“JOONGHYUK!! PLEASE COME SOON!! IT’S BIYOO—” Anna sobbed louder. “BIYOO SUDDENLY HAS SEIZURE. I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO!! PLEASE COME

than Anna Croft, his mistress.

He was mad for sure. He should have known he should not trust Yoo Joonghyuk for taking care of Biyoo. Look what had happened! What a fool he was! He walked fast toward them and unexpectedly, he threw a fist toward Yoo Joonghyuk’s face, so hard it made Yoo Joonghyuk wobble and almost fell down onto the floor. Anna screamed in shock.

“If something bad happens to Biyoo, I swear I’d never forgive you for the rest of my life, Yoo Joonghyuk.” Kim Dokja yelled at him with a wrath Yoo Joonghyuk had never seen before in his life.

“Have you calmed down now?” Yoo Joonghyuk asked Kim Dokja, one hand still covering his bruised cheek. They stood waiting in front of the ER room.

“Calm down?” Kim Dokja glared at him. “I cannot believe this. Why did you let that woman take care of our daughter? Biyoo wanted to spend some time with you, not with that bitch .”

“Watch your mouth, Kim Dokja.”

“It’s obviously because of her, our daughter is in a great pain, and you told me to watch my mouth for speaking out the truth?? What an awesome father you are, Yoo Joonghyuk.”

“It’s not her fault. She has no idea Biyoo had an allergy. And Biyoo didn’t eat that much. Who would’ve thought things would turn out like this?? Nobody wished for it to happen!”

“Unbelievable! You think I’d believe that?? Biyoo is not stupid. I taught her to always be careful of what she’s going to eat. I taught her to always ask about the food before eating it. Don’t you think our daughter would still eat that if that bitch told her what cookies she was eating??”

“And you think Anna would still let her eat if she knows Biyoo has an allergy?? You should think about it also, Dokja- yah !! Anna likes Biyoo!! There’s no way she wants to harm her!!”

“Oh, so I’m the one who’s being over exaggerated here??” Kim Dokja looked outraged, their daughter had almost died, and he had no right to be angry??

“Yes! You’re just trying to blame everything on Anna. In every disagreement we had, you always brought her into it!! I have enough, Dokja- yah !! Stop blaming her for everything that goes wrong in your life!!” Yoo Joonghyuk was shaking with rage, and he looked angry more than guilty.

“I can’t believe this!! You really changed, Yoo Joonghyuk!! I don’t know you anymore. You know what?? Just ignore what I said. Just go back to that slut and take care of her. I don’t need you here with me. I can take care of Biyoo on my own.”

“Biyoo is my daughter also!! And stop playing victim , Kim Dokja!! Don’t act innocently. You think I’d turn myself into another person if you didn’t do it in the first place??”

“What are you talking about?”

“Don’t deny it, Kim Dokja!! You were once two-timing me also. You really think you can get away from it??”

Kim Dokja looked shocked.

“You've got the idea. Do I have to spell it out for you?” It broke Yoo Joonghyuk’s heart to hear himself say it. He almost wondered how much more pain his heart could take in. For years already, he had wanted Kim Dokja to deny everything, and wanted none of it to be true. But it was, and now it could not be avoided. “You think I don’t know you’re having an affair with your ex-manager?? How many times did you allow that bastard, Sun Wukong, to sleep with you?? Don’t you even dare to deny it, Dokja- yah !! Don’t say that you don’t like him either, because I’m sure you did and still do until now!!”

“Are you out of your mind??”

“You started this, now you’re tasting your own karma .”

“So that’s what you’ve been thinking about me all this time. But you know what?? Everything you said is not true. I have never cheated on you. I did have another relationship before, but it ended when I got married to you. Why wouldn’t you believe—”

“Enough, Dokja- yah. Whatever you said, I will never trust you anymore. You know I have this relationship with Anna. I’m sure you’re not blind. In fact, you must know that our relationship is never real from the beginning. You and I are married based on an arrangement. You’re a popular actor five years ago, and frankly, I thought by marrying you would boost my reputation and I needed a spouse to inherit my family’s business.”

Kim Dokja slowly slumped down on a chair and stared at Yoo Joonghyuk blankly, hating every minute of their conversation. Truth be told, Yoo Joonghyuk took pity on Kim Dokja. Yoo Joonghyuk hated confrontations with him, he always had. But he knew now that this one couldn't be postponed or avoided. Maybe it was just as well. Kim Dokja had to know sooner or later.

“That’s why I made this marriage contract, and that’s all that we have between us. It is the fact that we never got married in the name of love. And don’t tell me you’re willing to marry me if I didn’t promise to help you to pay your mother’s medical bills that time. Cause I’m pretty sure you would’ve chosen that man over me, Kim Dokja. So maybe, what

“Will Dad be visiting me today?” Biyoo asked Kim Dokja, who was busy peeling an orange for her.

“He probably will, Biyoo- yah , when he has time.” Kim Dokja smiled at her dimly, and gave her the orange. “Do you miss him?”

“I do.” She beamed. “And I know you do, too, Appa .”

Kim Dokja was up-short. “What do you mean?”

“I saw you crying.” Biyoo’s voice was so little, obviously afraid she might offend her Appa. “I know you’re crying because you miss Dad. You always do that at home also.”

He chuckled. “Silly. I wasn’t crying just now not because I miss your Dad. I was crying because I’m too happy. I’m happy to see you back to normal.”

“Have you had your dinner, Appa ?”

“Not yet. I’m not hungry anyway.”

“You told me the same thing at lunch time. Go find something to eat, Appa. I don’t want you to get sick. You do know you look very pale now, right?”

Kim Dokja brushed the hair beside Biyoo’s cheek and tugged it behind her ear. Biyoo was just five years old, but he wondered how she could be this mature. He could never be thankful enough to have a daughter like her. “Okay, I’ll listen to you,” was all he could say to her, and before he went out, he hugged her, and it was a comfort to both of them. He needed her right now, more than anything, more than ever.

“I love you, Biyoo- yah .”

“I love you, too, Appa .”

Kim Dokja’s eyes filled with tears as he listened to it, not thinking about Yoo Joonghyuk anymore, or everything that had happened. He only wanted to think about Biyoo for now, and how they would survive even without Yoo Joonghyuk in their life. They could, and they would.

Yoo Joonghyuk lay down quietly for ten minutes in the bedroom. He closed his eyes, and tried to fall asleep, but there was too much whirling around in his head, too many terrible things, too much pain, too much guilt, too many questions— about Biyoo— about Kim Dokja — about their marriage— and life and death, and the meaning of everything. Then he heard a sound and opened his eyes, and saw his phone blaring in the darkness.

It was a call from Biyoo. It was 7 p.m.

“Biyoo?” He called her name.

“Dad? Where are you? It’s cold here.”

“Where’s your Appa ?”

“He went out just now. I told him to get something to eat. He hasn’t eaten anything yet today, not even lunch. Will you come here tonight? I want you here, Dad. Hug me?”

He did not know what else to say to her. Too much had happened, too much had been said and revealed for them ever to be the same person they had once been to each other. He wanted to be there, but he did not know if he could do that, because it was devastating to think about it, and impossible to pretend that nothing happened. “I want to be there also, Biyoo- yah , but I’m afraid it’s very late now. The nurses might not allow me in your room, and you’ll probably be asleep already when I get there.”

“Dad, remember our secret ?”

Secret? About Kim Dokja? Unfortunately, he remembered. He remembered the guilt.

Appa is crying again the whole day, but he lied to me. I know it because I pretend I was sleeping. What’s wrong, Dad? Are the two of you fighting? Is it because of me? I promise you, Dad, I’ll be a good girl. I’ll try my best to be better, so please don’t fight anymore. I miss you being together with Appa again.”

Yoo Joonghyuk was at a loss of words. Was he ready to tell Biyoo about what really happened between him and Kim Dokja? He loved her, and respected Kim Dokja. Kim Dokja was a terrific father to their daughter, and a great spouse to him. He was once a great friend, and a great person. Five years ago, Kim Dokja was everything any man would want— but now, Kim Dokja did not set his heart and his mind on fire the way Anna did, and nothing he could do or say would change that.

Yet it did not change the fact that he cared about them. He might not be in love with Kim Dokja anymore, but he would always love his daughter. It was painful for him to see Biyoo have to go through such an unpleasant experience.

So in the end, he could only tell her, “I’m sorry, Biyoo- yah. It’s not your fault. I promise you, when everything’s settled, I’ll be there for you, and we’ll be together again.”

“BIYOO!!! BIYOO!!! WHAT’S WRONG???”
