The power of genetics: My positive opinion Since our beginnings, we had always been in search of answers and the development of tools to help us improve the quality of our lives. This same curiosity had driven scientific advances that have revolutionized our understanding of life, leading to the discovery of the human genome, a medical milestone that has opened the doors to a new era of personalized medicine. In this essay, I will outline the reasons why I agree with genetic testing, because not only improves a patient's quality of life, but is also key to advancing the development of new therapies. Knowing what our genetic predispositions are to develop certain diseases can be a first step to take preventive measures and improve our quality of life. For example, if the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes had not been discovered, women with a family history of breast cancer might have faced even greater challenges in early detection and prevention. Now, women with this mutation can decide to have more frequent mammograms , consult with specialists, or a prophylactic mastectomy. If we had not made these discoveries, many patients would still be relying on trial-and-error methods to find effective treatments, but now, knowing our genetic predisposition to certain pathologies and potential risk factors, we can take preventive measures and tailor treatments to our individual needs. In this way, genetics allows us to make informed decisions about our health and to act proactively to prevent disease. The willingness to share genetic data is essential to completely transform medicine. Providing researchers with access to a greater amount of genetic data would allow them to visualize patterns and associations that are currently undetectable. If more individuals had been willing to share their genetic information, the impact on the pace of medical research would have been significantly accelerated. Therefore, different therapies and pioneering treatments will be developed and provided to the public, as well as identifying individuals at risk of developing certain diseases early. In addition, databases of this type will drive research in other fields, for example, pharmacogenomics, which seeks to understand how genetic variations influence drug response. Consequently, if patients had been more aware of the importance of sharing their genetic data, medical research would have experienced exponential growth. In conclusion, the innate curiosity of human beings about their bodies had allowed them to decipher the genetic code. This scientific odyssey has allowed the emergence of a whole new discipline of personalized medicine, in which genetic results can prevent diseases, improving the patient's quality of life and if genetic research continues to progress at this pace, we can anticipate even greater breakthroughs in the field of medicine.
