ESSAY STRUCTURE

• An essay is a piece of writing that supports a particular thesis statement which usually tackles serious

issues.

• Essays typically have a hook, a thesis statement, a set of arguments and a conclusion.

  • Make sure you have clear the structure of your essay before you start writing.

English B.2. THE INTRODUCTION The main goal of a hook is to catch the reader’s attention. There are different strategies that you can use for your hook:

  • Rhetorical question
  • Shocking fact
  • Anecdote
  • Quote A thesis statement describes your position on the matter. Do not forget that a thesis statement… … can never be a fact. … should have a prominent position in the introduction. … should be as clear and specific as possible. THE BODY OF THE ESSAY Each paragraph of the body should include a topic sentence , which can be defined as the main idea of a paragraph. They have a critical role to make the writer’s claim clear for the reader. A topic sentence states the main idea of a paragraph. It is usually found at the beginning of a paragraph. A topic sentence has several important jobs. It:
  • introduces the main idea.
  • limits or focuses the topic.
  • often tells the reader how the information will be organized in the paragraph.

English B.2. ESSAY PLAN Before you write your essay, plan the points you want to make, and find evidence to back up your ideas. Try using the T.E.F.L technique to help you structure each paragraph:

  • Topic sentence (or Point. P.E.E.L version) : this is a statement about what point your paragraph will make. Sometimes topic sentences are not the first sentences of a paragraph.
  • Example : this is evidence to back up your point.
  • Explanation : this is where you demonstrate that you understand your example, and explain how it supports your point.
  • Link : this is where you sum up your point, and then introduce your next idea.
