J.R.R. TOLKIEN’S ‘LORD OF THE RINGS’
1 When Christopher and Michael Tolkien were young, their father would tell
them tales of dwarves, elves, and hobbits. But the stories weren’t read from a
book they came from J.R.R. Tolkien’s imagination and only his children
were able to enter into the world of Middle Earth. It wasn’t until Christopher
5 critiqued his father’s bad memory about details of the story that his father took
a pen to paper and began recording the well-loved saga of The Lord of the
Rings that we know today.
In the introduction to the 50th anniversary printing of The Hobbit,
Christopher wrote: “I (then between four and five years old) was greatly
10 concerned with consistency as the story unfolded, and on one occasion I
interrupted: ‘Last time, you said Bilbo’s front door was blue, and you said
Thorin had a gold tassel on his hood, but you’ve just said that Bilbo’s front
door was green, and the tassel on Thorin’s hood was silver’; at which point
my father muttered ‘Damn the boy,’ and then strode across the room to his
15 desk to make a note.”
As his sons grew up, they also helped him type up the stories. They even
helped in the editing process. Tolkien paid his son, Christopher, two pennies
for every mistake he found when reading through the manuscript.
Through his incredible relationship with his children, Tolkien found help
and inspiration for the creation of one of the greatest literary works of the 20th
century. QUESTIONS

VIOLENCE AT SCHOOLS

1 My name is Susan. I am a student at James High School in Jackson. In the days since the attack that killed 12 people here, I have continued replaying those terrifying moments in my head. It began when a fire alarm went off just before school was supposed to 5 end. People in my class had already left, and I took my backpack to evacuate. We thought nothing of it. Then I heard people running and my teacher yelling at us to get back in the class. There were lots of messages in my phone from family, asking if I was O.K. I texted my family and told them that I loved them. My friends, 10 classmates and teachers are dead. My friend Gina is dead. I had just talked to her that morning in art class. We laughed together, we sang together, we smiled together. We will never do that again. We can’t let innocent people’s deaths be in vain. We need tougher gun laws. If a person is not old enough to be able to rent a car or buy a beer, then 15 he should not be able to legally buy a weapon. This could have been prevented. If the killer had been properly treated for his mental illness, maybe this would not have happened. It’s devastating that this happened on Valentine’s Day, a day that’s supposed to be about love. Don’t let any more children suffer like we have. Next time it could be your family, your friends, your neighbors, or even you.
