I * COMPREHENSION (4 points). CHOOSE TEXT 1 OR TEXT 2 AND ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS FROM THAT TEXT ONLY. TEXT 1: FASHION AND WASTE 1 In 2018, beauty vlogger Samantha Ravndahl announced to her legion of subscribers that she would no longer accept 2 promotional samples because she was concerned about the waste in the packaging of beauty and fashion items. She was trying 3 to combat not just her own waste, but that of all her followers. 4 It’s really a game of chicken or the egg to decide who is to blame for the culture of waste: social media or fashion itself? The 5 answer is a toxic combination of both. Before social media, there were magazines, glossy pages that dictated what was in and out. 6 They only came out once a week or a month, but they perpetuated the idea that fashion had an expiration date. By giving users 7 unlimited potential to broadcast their lives, social media has gone further and made it an unwritten fashion rule that “new” means 8 better: you cannot wear the same outfit twice. 41% of people between 19 and 25 years old say they won’t rewear an outfit, and 9 four in five consumers say they have made a purchase because an influencer shared it. This is where Samantha Ravndahl wants 10 to make a change. 11 The consequences of an entire generation using and rapidly throwing away products and clothes that are mostly non- 12 degradable is apocalyptic for our environment. It is undoubtedly clear that the benefits of social media, measured in likes and 13 shares, are not worth the harm they’re doing to the planet. We are facing the complete destruction of our ecosystem. Starting with 14 our own relationship with social media, shouldn’t we reexamine the habits that make us complicit in the climate crisis? CHOOSE AND WRITE THE CORRECT OPTION (A, B, C or D). (0.5 points each)

  1. According to the text, Samantha Ravndahl… (a) will never shop online again. (b) will sell the samples she gets. (c) will no longer comment fashion on her vlog. (d) will not take free items anymore.
  2. According to the text, social media… (a) promotes sustainable fashion. (b) has worsened the environmental problem. (c) does not encourage waste. (d) does not support the use of chemicals in clothes. ARE THESE STATEMENTS TRUE OR FALSE? JUSTIFY YOUR ANSWERS WITH THE PRECISE WORDS OR PHRASES FROM THE TEXT, OR USE YOUR OWN WORDS. (0.5 points each)
  3. Samantha has plenty of followers.
  4. Social media is solely responsible for the culture of waste.
  5. Fashion magazines used to come out at least twice a week.
  6. According to the text, most consumers say they buy what their friends recommend.
  7. FIND IN THE TEXT: (0.5 points) 7.1. ONE SYNONYM FOR “poisonous” (adjective). 7.2. ONE SYNONYM FOR “complete” (adjective).
  8. FIND IN THE TEXT: (0.5 points) 8.1. ONE WORD MEANING: “the act or process of buying something” 8.2. ONE WORD MEANING: “set of clothes worn together for a particular occasion or purpose”

TEXT 2: WHAT IS BRAINSTORMING?

1 Brainstorming is a group creativity technique that is often used in companies to find a solution to a specific problem. This is 2 accomplished by gathering and recording new ideas from staff in a free-flowing manner. Brainstorming sessions are usually made 3 up of a handful of core team members, and are typically led by a director or facilitator. 4 Brainstorming originated from an advertising executive named Alex F. Osborne, and dates to 1939. Frustrated with his 5 employees’ inability to generate creative new ideas, Osborne began developing new methods for problem solving that used a 6 team-based approach to work. He organized group-thinking sessions, and discovered that it led to a significant rise in the quality 7 and quantity of new ideas. Osborne called these group meetings “brainstorm” sessions, and wrote about the technique in later 8 publications. 9 In brainstorming sessions, ideas are collected and recorded using whatever tool is available to the team. Modern businesses 10 have begun to adopt digital platforms or mind mapping tools to speed up the process. Quantity of ideas is usually emphasized 11 over quality, with the goal of generating as many new suggestions as possible. Once all the ideas have been collected, the team 12 evaluates each of them and focuses on the ones that are more likely to work. 13 Brainstorming is a technique that helps teams innovate and work collaboratively but there is no single right way to hold a 14 brainstorming session. For example, individual or reverse brainstorming sessions are also possible and have in fact proved to be 15 helpful ways of generating new ideas. The goal should always be to use what works best for you and your team. CHOOSE AND WRITE THE CORRECT OPTION (A, B, C or D). (0.5 points each)

  1. Brainstorming… (a) can only be done one way. (b) does not stimulate collaboration. (c) prioritizes quality over quantity. (d) generates ideas that must be evaluated later on.
  2. Typically, participants in brainstorming sessions… (a) make a fixed number of contributions. (b) are a selected group. (c) write about the technique used when they finish. (d) never work under supervision. ARE THESE STATEMENTS TRUE OR FALSE? JUSTIFY YOUR ANSWERS WITH THE PRECISE WORDS OR PHRASES FROM THE TEXT, OR USE YOUR OWN WORDS. (0.5 points each)
  3. The first brainstorming session was aimed to provide for the lack of imagination of a group of employees.
  4. Osborne’s initial experimentation with brainstorming did not produce positive results.
  5. During a brainstorming session, the ideas must be recorded using digital platforms.
  6. When using brainstorming, you must choose the methodology that best suits your interests and goals.
  7. FIND IN THE TEXT: (0.5 points) 15.1. ONE SYNONYM FOR “assess” (verb). 15.2. ONE OPPOSITE FOR “useless” (adjective).
  8. FIND IN THE TEXT: (0.5 points) 16.1. ONE WORD MEANING “the aim towards which an endeavour is directed” 16.2. ONE WORD MEANING “a very small number of people or things”

CHOOSE TEXT 1 OR TEXT 2 AND ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS FROM THAT TEXT ONLY. TEXT 1: I HAVE A DREAM 1 Every January we celebrate Martin Luther King Day, the holiday honouring the life of the great civil rights leader. I’ve always 2 loved MLK Day because my grandparents tell stories of fighting in the civil rights movement, of feeling as though MLK was speaking 3 directly to them, urging them to fight for a better future. 4 The speech that I remember watching in school was of course the one containing the famous phrase “I have a dream”. This 5 phrase was so powerful on its own that it has since come to define King’s message, and movement. What I never learned as a 6 child, however, is that this phrase was not part of the script for the speech that King had prepared. 7 On August 28, 1963, approximately 250,000 attendees gathered in Washington DC for the March on Washington for Jobs and 8 Freedom, intended to support civil rights for African Americans. People had travelled for many hours from across the country to be 9 present for the march. The crowd marched to the Lincoln Memorial, where they sang and danced as they waited to hear the already 10 famous Dr. King. Once King started his speech, Mahalia Jackson, who had seen him speak about his dreams before, shouted 11 "Tell them about the dream, Martin". At this point, King abandoned his script and began an improvised account of his dream for a 12 better future. The crowd cheered as King described a world in which children were not judged by the colour of their skin and 13 freedom called from every hill and mountain in America. This strong imagery helped them to share his dream. And that’s how the 14 most inspiring speech in the 20th century was born. CHOOSE AND WRITE THE CORRECT OPTION (A, B, C or D). (0.5 points each)

  1. The author… (a) only learned about the civil rights movement at home. (b) admires MLK’s speech. (c) recites the speech every January. (d) witnessed the I Have a Dream speech in 1963.
  2. According to the text, … (a) Mahalia Jackson wrote the speech. (b) Mahalia Jackson made King depart from his notes. (c) Some marchers asked King to talk about his dream. (d) Dr. King asked Mahalia Jackson for help. ARE THESE STATEMENTS TRUE OR FALSE? JUSTIFY YOUR ANSWERS WITH THE PRECISE WORDS OR PHRASES FROM THE TEXT, OR USE YOUR OWN WORDS. (0.5 points each)
  3. The author’s grandparents took part in the civil rights movement.
  4. As a child, the author ignored that the “I have a dream” part of the speech was not planned in advance.
  5. Only Washingtonians were allowed to attend the march.
  6. Marchers kept quiet as they waited for the speech.

TEXT 2: ALTERNATIVE DIETS

1 More and more people are choosing the vegan diet, which excludes all food that comes from animals, such as meat, dairy and 2 eggs. However, some vegans are making the choice to return to the meat market. 3 Susie Nicholson became vegan at the age of 19. “I wanted to become vegan because I was very concerned about animal 4 abuse and farming methods, and I felt I should stop eating meat,” she said. But as the years went by, she saw her health deteriorate 5 and wondered what might be the cause. She decided to return to eating meat 6 years later. “I was suffering with depression and a 6 slow thyroid, and I decided to make a change. It was not what I was eating, but what I was not eating, and making that change 7 might make a difference”. 8 She was very sceptical about it at first, she says, but the impact was almost immediate. Within 48 hours, she started to feel 9 better. “From an ethical point of view, I wish I could live without animal products, but my body just can't cope with it”. 10 According to the National Health Service (NHS), vegans should plan ahead and eat a varied and balanced diet to be able to 11 get all the nutrients they need. For example, vegans must make sure they do not miss out on calcium, iron and B12, which are 12 important dietary elements. The NHS suggests eating plant-based proteins, a variety of fruit and vegetables, and dairy substitutes 13 like soya drinks and yoghurt. 14 So, if you want to try a vegan diet, it makes sense to start by asking a professional nutritionist for specific advice. CHOOSE AND WRITE THE CORRECT OPTION (A, B, C or D). (0.5 points each)

  1. Susie would like to continue eating a vegan diet, but she… (a) has developed an intolerance to vegetables. (b) can’t cook vegan food. (c) can’t afford it anymore. (d) can’t live on a strict vegan diet anymore.

  2. According to the text, Susie went vegan because… (a) she was concerned about her health. (b) her doctor advised her to. (c) she didn’t like the way animals are treated. (d) she hates the taste of meat. ARE THESE STATEMENTS TRUE OR FALSE? JUSTIFY YOUR ANSWERS WITH THE PRECISE WORDS OR PHRASES FROM THE TEXT, OR USE YOUR OWN WORDS. (0.5 points each)

  3. The number of vegans is currently growing.

  4. Susie noticed very soon the effects of quitting the vegan diet.

  5. Proteins can only be found in meat.

  6. People who want to go vegan should get help from an expert.

  7. FIND IN THE TEXT: (0.5 points) 15.1. ONE SYNONYM FOR “selection” (noun). 15.2. ONE OPPOSITE FOR “improve” (verb).

  8. FIND IN THE TEXT: (0.5 points) 16.1. ONE WORD MEANING “recommendation as to appropriate choice of action” 16.2. ONE WORD MEANING “not easily convinced, having doubts or reservations”

For instance, Night of the Living Dead became a fan favorite because it was a great movie that didn’t receive the recognition 6 it deserved when it was originally released in 1968. Others like The Toxic Avenger (1984) became cult hits for the opposite reason: 7 they are terrible movies. 8 The most famous cult movie of all time, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, has been showing as a midnight movie at certain 9 theaters since 1976. Often, fans recite dialogue along with the movie, dress as their favorite character, and throw objects at the 10 screen, much to the irritation of theater owners and cleaning staff. 11 Cult films owe much of their current success to the Internet, but fans still love to meet in person at crowded conventions where 12 they can share enthusiasm for their beloved films. For example, The Big Lebowski (1998) has inspired an annual “Lebowski Fest” 13 that celebrates every aspect of the film and has even created a religion called Dudeism after the Dude, the main character of the 14 film. 15 Few films can inspire such dedication from their fans, which makes cult movies perhaps the best type of movies —or at least 16 the only ones that provide endless fun for their faithful fans! TEXT 2: THE SEISES

1 Twice a year, ten choir boys dance The Dance of the Six at the Cathedral of Seville. Known as The Seises , they have been 2 dancing at least from the very beginning of the 16th century. Why is it called The Dance of the Six if there are ten dancers? The 3 name derives from the original number of performers. They were six dancers dancing to the sound of singing and a percussion 4 instrument typical of flamenco music, the castanets. They have kept their name for the sake of tradition. 5 The music has also changed considerably. The present orchestra music is very charming but does not sound very 16th- 6 century-like. As for the costume, the boys are dressed with traditional page clothing that varies colour according to the feast. 7 In 1685, the Bishop of the local church ordered the dance to be suppressed because he considered it a legacy of pagan culture. 8 The decision was not very popular, as the dance had been part of the Cathedral’s life for many years and was greatly admired in 9 the city. Determined not to lose what for them was a very important tradition, the Cathedral authorities appealed to the Pope for 10 the dance to continue. Thanks to their determination, the dance was finally allowed to continue seventeen years later. There was 11 one condition, though: when the kids’ clothes wore out, the dance had to stop. 12 Of course, the clothes never wore out, for people took care to repair them again and again. That is why the original material 13 has ever since been replaced so many times, but never all at once. CHOOSE AND WRITE THE CORRECT OPTION (A, B, C or D). (0.5 points each)

  2. According to the text, the Pope allowed the dance to continue… (a) if dancers wore different clothes. (b) without any restrictions. (c) if people paid for the clothes. (d) till the clothes deteriorated. ARE THESE STATEMENTS TRUE OR FALSE? JUSTIFY YOUR ANSWERS WITH THE PRECISE WORDS OR PHRASES FROM THE TEXT, OR USE YOUR OWN WORDS. (0.5 points each)

CHOOSE TEXT 1 OR TEXT 2 AND ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS FROM THAT TEXT ONLY. TEXT 1: DISNEY PRINCESSES: NOW AND THEN 1 Linguists Carmen Fought and Karen Eisenhauer have analyzed all the dialogue from the Disney princess films. “A lot of young 2 girls watch these movies, often on constant repeat, so we should examine what the films are teaching about gender roles”, says 3 Fought. “Girls aren’t born liking a pink dress. At some point we teach them. So a big question is where girls get their ideas about 4 being girls”. 5 To modern eyes, the classic trio of Disney princess films —Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty— are painfully 6 retrograde. However, in them women speak as much as, or even more than men. When Disney released The Little Mermaid, critics 7 praised this modern heroine for thinking and acting independently, even rebelliously. And yet, men make up 68% of the dialogue. 8 In the princess movies that followed —Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas and Mulan— the women speak even less. On average, 9 male characters have three times as many lines as women in those films. 10 Fortunately, newer films like Tangled and Brave are better at giving dialogue to men and women in equal shares. Furthermore, 11 what the characters say in those dialogues is also in the right direction. The classic Disney princess films were focused on physical 12 appearance: 55% of the compliments that women received referred to their looks. By contrast, in the latest films Merida, Elsa or 13 Rapunzel are admired for their skills or achievements. 14 Disney is clearly proud of its efforts to modernize the princess movie genre, but it still has a lot of work to do. "It's also important”, 15 the linguists say, “to consider the kinds of worlds these princesses inhabit and who has the power in them”. CHOOSE AND WRITE THE CORRECT OPTION (A, B, C or D). (0.5 points each)

TEXT 2: SPANISH GUIRI

1 The word guiri is commonly used in Spain to describe a certain type of traveler, a foreign tourist who struggles to understand 2 the local culture, or someone from abroad who, once retired, decides to move here. 3 Apparently, the word guiri took on its current meaning thanks to a man named Gary Bedell. Bedell was born in Canada in 1954 4 and learned Spanish at a young age. He joined Canada’s diplomatic service, and in 1992, he oversaw the Canadian pavilion at 5 the Universal Exposition of Seville (Expo'92). During the six months the Expo was on, the Canadian diplomat got to know the city. 6 He discovered Andalusian beers and took long walks across the city. Bedell has now lived in Spain for more than 20 years. In an 7 interview, he claimed “Andalusians have everything”. While Gary is his birth name, he became known as Guiri in Seville. Bedell 8 took on the nickname and used it in his favor – for a while, it was even part of the name of his travel website on Spain, The guiri’s 9 corner. 10 Today everyone uses the word in their own way to refer to tourists. It is not insulting, but it is also difficult to give it an entirely 11 positive meaning. In a recent Twitter debate, one user who identified himself as a foreign visitor to Spain argued that the word 12 perpetuates unfair stereotypes. According to him, the Spanish use the word to describe tourists who travel across Spain eating 13 “fluorescent paella” and going to bars no local would ever enter. In other words, he said, the word is used to describe someone 14 who is not one of us, and will never be. CHOOSE AND WRITE THE CORRECT OPTION (A, B, C or D). (0.5 points each)
