Monica Pinto's exercise
1- The peace of Westphalia is the agreement that took place between the catholics and the
protestants at the end of the Roman Empire, that ended uo with a period of 30 years of war. The
mentioned agreement it's important because, with the necessity to regulate the relactions
between independent states that for the first time recognised power equality between them, the
fundamental features and the most important institutions of International Law were built.
2- The principle of equal sovereignity is the lack of jerarchy between states, no matter it's size,
population or economic and militar power. All the states were on an equal footing.
3- Monica Pinto also talks about the non-intervention principle between states in internal issues.
The previously mentioned principle leds to another one called the sovereign inmunity of states.
4- In the XVIII century took place the Peace of Utrecht, that opened the door to the colonial
period when Europe expanded all his power throughout the world over local communities.
Institutions were created in order to facilitate the regulations between the states and it's colonies,
and with the objective of taking advantage of the colony's sources.
5- The XIX century started with the napoleon wars, that led to the Viena Congress where an
agreement was made between the most important countries of the northern Europe that broke
the non-intervention princple introduced by the Peace of Westphaila, in order to preserve the
monarquic states.
