The diaphragm is a dome-shaped skeletal muscle.

It separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity.

It is the primary muscle involved in breathing.

STRUCTURE OF THE

DIAPHRAGM

Made of skeletal muscle and a central tendon. Has two domes: Right dome Left dome The central tendon is the non-muscular center. Innervated by the phrenic nerve (C3–C5).

1. Sternal Portion Originates from the xiphoid process of the sternum.
2. Costal Portion Originates from the lower six ribs and their cartilages.
3. Lumbar Portion Originates from the lumbar vertebrae through the crura.

PORTIONS OF THE

DIAPHRAGM

All muscle fibers insert into the central tendon. The central tendon is attached to the fibrous pericardium. The right and left crura attach the diaphragm to the lumbar vertebrae.
