Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein:

the creature and the creator

Crítica Práctica de Literatura Inglesa 2015-

Ana Fernández-Caparrós Turina

“But where were my friends and relations? No father had watched my infant days, no mother had blessed me with smiles and caresses….I had never yet seen a being resembling me, or who claimed intercourse with me. What was I?” Frankenstein , II, vi

The creature’s body, in its imposing, yet occult, significance is monstrous.

But in the novel, the manner in which it signifies is neither spontaneous nor

transparent. Instead, its meaning is revealed gradually through the

monster’s narrative, when he takes us through his first sensory

perceptions, through his strivings for language, through his ardent

attentions to the De Laceys, through his inchoate desires, through his first

self-conscious reflections (literal and figurative), through his interpretations

of signs and later books, all the way to the coalescence of his attitudes and

opinions. In Mary Shelley’s novel, far more hinges on the creature’s

capacities than on his nature, especially since the creature’s essential plea

to Frankenstein is that his moral formation remains radically unfinished.
