GOING TO

TECHNOLOGY VOCABULARY

USES OF FUTURE - GOING TO INTENTIONS We use be going to to talk about future plans and intentions. Usually the decision about the future plans have already been made. Example: She ’s going to be a professional dancer when she grows up. I ’m going to look for a new place to live next month.

USES OF FUTURE - GOING TO COMMANDS We use be going to when we give commands or state that something is obligatory [parent to a child]. Example: You’re going to pick up all of those toys right now. This room is a mess! I’m telling you, you’re going to do it. You don’t have a choice.

FUTURE SIMPLE - BE GOING TO FORM

be + going to + the base form of the verb

Examples: I ’m going to take a few exams at the end of the year. It ’s going to be difficult to get a job during the summer because I can only work night shifts.

FUTURE SIMPLE - BE GOING TO AFFIRMATIVE FORM Structure: Subject + Auxiliary + Going to + Verb base + Complement Examples: I am going to take a photo with my digital camera. You are going to use my printer. My family and I are going to travel to Europe in two weeks.

FUTURE SIMPLE - BE GOING TO QUESTION FORM In interrogative sentences , the verb to be is placed first, followed by the subject, then the going to structure and finally the main verb in infinitive. Structure (QW) + Auxiliary + Subject + Going to + Verb base + Complement +? Examples: Are you going to use my umbrella? What are you going to do tomorrow? Is he going to use my memory stick?

EXERCISE 3 Think about your life in the future (five years, ten years, etc.). Read Sabrina’s paragraph and write a similar paragraph about your plans for the future. Remember to use “going to”! In two years, I am going to change jobs. I’m going to start a business and work as a candle maker. In five years, I am going to grow my business and expand all over the state. My candles are going to be a success! In five years I am also going to get married and start a family with my husband. We are going to have three kids! In ten years, I am going to buy a house with the money from my candle business and we are going to live there. The house is going to have a big pool in the backyard and a lot of space for the kids to play.
