When we use 2 verbs together in a sentence, the second

verb will be either a gerund or an infinitive.

They love playing football (verb + gerund) They want to play football (verb + to infinitive) Gerunds & Infinitives

C. Some verbs can take the gerund or infinitive with

no change in meaning.

I hate watching TV / I hate to watch TV begin, hate, like, love, prefer, start

D. There are some verbs which can take either the

gerund or

to+infinitive but with different meanings

forget, regret, remember, stop, try, go on I must remember to buy a card / I remember buying a card

Other rules for: Gerunds Infinitives As the subject or object of a verb: Smoking is bad for your health After adjectives: I’m very happy to move to Canada After prepositions: I am upset for letting them in my house To give a reason or show purpose: My parents phoned me to know where I was After “be/get used to”: I’m used to traveling around After “used to”: I used to eat meat but now I don't anymore.
