Chapter one. Spooky, Lucy.
Lucy Grey wasn't an ordinary 17 year old girl. She had a special talent. She could sometimes see
and talk to ghosts. Lucy hated her unusual powers and tried to keep them a secret. The students at
Forest Park High School didn't like Lucy. They called her Spooky Lucy and they laughed at her
behind her back. Lucy's mother was worried because her daughter didn't have any friends. You
never go out in the evenings, Lucy, she said. You should try harder to make friends with the kids at
school. But Mrs. Grey didn't understand how difficult it was. The kids at school were still talking
about the last Halloween party. That was the worst night of Lucy's life. The school was full of
ghosts that night and they all wanted to talk to Lucy. I died here in 1768, said one. Tell my wife. I'm
sorry, said another. Then they started to walk through the walls. They followed Lucy into the
corridor, then into a classroom, and they didn't stop talking. She walked from place to place and
covered her ears, but it didn't help. Then she shouted very loudly, leave me alone! I don't want to
hear you anymore! Suddenly everybody stopped dancing and stared at her. Lucy ran home in tears.
After that, Lucy never went to any more school parties, and only one boy agreed to sit next to her in
class. His name was Paul Miller and he was a new student. He heard the stories about Spooky Lucy,
but he didn't care. He liked Lucy because she was intelligent and more interesting than the other
girls. Paul was intelligent and good looking too. All the girls liked him and tried to get his attention.
They sat next to him during lunch and asked him for help with their homework, and invited him to
parties. But Paul preferred to talk to Lucy. The summer holiday was approaching and Lucy's mother
had plans for her. You should go on the school excursion this summer, she said. It will be good for
you to spend time with the kids from school. Lucy said no, but then Paul Miller changed her mind. I
don't usually like school excursions, Paul said. But they're going to Greenland this summer. Let's go
Lucy. It will be an incredible experience. Well, I don't know, said Lucy. I really don't want to go. I
won't go if you don't go, said Paul. Lucy was embarrassed and she didn't know what to say. Well,
maybe I'll think about it, she said. Lucy thought about it the entire day. Then she completed the
application form for the trip. It was the 5th of July, and the students were at the Baltimore-
Washington International Airport waiting to get their boarding cards and seats on the plane. Helena
Holbrook, a popular girl with long red hair, was next to Paul. She wanted to sit next to him on the
plane, but Paul asked for a seat next to Lucy. Helena gave Lucy an angry look. Why does he like
spooky Lucy? She said quietly to a friend. On the plane, Lucy and Paul sat in front of Mr. Jones and
Mrs. Gordon, the geography teachers. The plane flew north across the Canadian frontier. Lucy
looked out of the window at the green hills far below. The roads and rivers were now just thin lines,
and the lakes shone like silver. There were television screens above the seats and they showed a
documentary about Greenland. Lucy and Paul were watching two polar bears on the screen when
Mrs. Gordon touched Lucy's shoulder. Look out of the window, she said. They looked out at a
beautiful sunset. There was a red line across the sky, and the sun, now low in the sky, was shining
on the Atlantic Ocean. Suddenly they saw a strange cloud. It was very bright and it illuminated the
evening sky. That's a noctilucent cloud, said Mrs. Gordon. A what? Asked Paul. A noctilucent
cloud, replied Mrs. Gordon. It's a new type of cloud, and it appears near the Arctic and Antarctic.
You can only see it at sunset. Why is it so bright? Asked Lucy. It's made of ice, so it reflects the
light and looks very bright, explained Mrs. Gordon. A few years ago, these clouds didn't exist, but
now the climate is changing and many unusual things are happening in this part of the world. Lucy
watched the cloud until it disappeared. Then she closed her eyes and fell asleep. Two hours later,
Paul woke her. They were landing in Greenland.

Then she closed her eyes and fell asleep. Two hours later, Paul woke her. They were landing in Greenland. Chapter two. The melting ice.

The airport was next to a fjord with a small harbour. The air outside was cool and fresh and the midnight sun was shining. Wow. Sun at midnight, said one of the boys. That's very strange. The sun shines all day in the summer, explained Mr. Jones. In the winter it doesn't shine at all, and sometimes there are coloured lights in the sky. People call them the Northern Lights. A cruise ship was waiting for the group at the harbour. They took their bags and carried them onto the ship. Then Mr. Jones made an announcement. We're going to travel to the east coast of Greenland, he said. The trip will take three days. We are now sailing along Erik's Fjord. The famous Viking explorer Erik the Red stopped at this part of the fjord and built a home on the other side of the river. At the end of the trip will return to Erik's Fjord and visit a Viking farm. Most of you are sharing a cabin. Collect your cabin keys from the reception desk and then go to sleep. I'm sure you're all very tired. We're meeting for breakfast in the restaurant at 8:30 in the morning, so please arrive on time. Before they went to their cabins. Paul pulled Lucy's hand and took her to the front deck to see the view. They could see desolate green hills on both sides of the fjord. There were small white and blue icebergs in the water. Isn't Greenland incredible? Asked Paul. Yes, it's more beautiful than I imagined, replied Lucy. Lucy was feeling very happy that night. The other students were being nice to her and there weren't any ghosts to bother her. Lucy was quite an expert on ghosts by now. She knew that they didn't travel far. They preferred to stay near the places or people they knew. It was unusual to find ghosts on planes or ships. Lucy felt very calm and relaxed. This is going to be a real holiday for me, she thought. There won't be any ghosts talking in my ear and following me around. I can relax and enjoy the trip. Lucy went to her cabin and was surprised to see Helena Holbrook there. She looked at Lucy angrily and her face became as red as her hair. There must be a mistake, Helena shouted angrily. I asked to be in a cabin with Megan. Oh no, thought Lucy. I prefer ghosts to Helena Holbrook. Do I have to share a cabin with that horrible girl? I'm going to speak to Mrs. Gordon about this, Helena said. She took her bag and left the cabin. Luckily, she didn't return that night. After breakfast the next morning, everybody met on the ship's deck. There were some other passengers on the deck, a Norwegian couple with two children, a tall girl in a long blue dress and a quiet English lady. We're now sailing next to the east coast of Greenland, said Mrs. Gordon. Notice there is more ice and snow in this area, but you can still see some green hills. Many years ago, ice covered all of Greenland. But the climate is warmer now and the ice is melting. Yes, global warming is an enormous problem in this area, added Mr. Jones. Most of Greenland is still covered with ice. If all the ice melts, the sea level will rise by seven metres all over the world. Wow, that's frightening! Exclaimed one of the boys. If that happens, a lot of coastal land will disappear into the sea. Yes, but you don't have to worry about that today, said Mr. Jones. Just relax and enjoy the voyage, because we've got a busy day tomorrow. We're going to go swimming at some hot springs. Then we're going to stop at a small village to see how the Inuit people live. From there, we're going to walk to a glacier. Lucy smiled at Paul. This is going to be a great holiday, she said. I'm happy I came. Chapter three. The Mirage. The students looked at the pieces of floating ice in the water. How can we swim in this? Asked one of the girls. We'll freeze to death. We're going to stop at some hot springs, Mr. Jones explained. The water is warm and comfortable. It's perfect for swimming. Seabirds flew around the ship and followed them through the sea. Everybody sat on the deck and watched the ship zigzag through giant icebergs of different shapes and sizes. They passed a few fishing boats near the coast. They're catching fish and seals, Mrs. Gordon explained. The seals are an important source of food here. Oh, I could never eat a seal! Exclaimed Megan. They're adorable creatures. Seal meat is the national food of Greenland, said Mrs. Gordon. The local Inuit people capture about 10,000 seals a year, but they don't kill baby seals. They use seal skin to make clothes. At the Inuit village, you'll see hats,

asked. I'm seasick, Paul replied. I took some tablets, but they didn't help and I think I've got a temperature. The sea is very calm today, Mr. Jones said. I don't think you're seasick. Maybe you're ill. You can't go on the trip today, Paul. Go and see the ship's doctor, then rest in your cabin. I'll stay here with him, said Lucy. Are you sure, Lucy? Asked Mr. Jones. Don't you want to see the Inuit village and the glacier? Yes, I'm sure, said Lucy. Okay, I'll take some photos for you, said Mr. Jones, and he followed the students out of the dining room. No, Lucy, go on the trip, Paul told Lucy. I'll be fine. Go and enjoy the experience. No, I want to stay, said Lucy. You look terrible. Go and see the doctor. Okay, but I'm not going to stay in bed, Paul said. I'll meet you here. I'll bring you a warm blanket, said Lucy. Lucy went downstairs. Suddenly she saw the old man in his white pyjamas again. Oh, not now, thought Lucy. Why can't he leave me alone? I can't find my room, said the man. Please can you help me? Suddenly the lights went out again and the ghostly figure was moving around in the dark. A hand touched Lucy's arm and she jumped in horror. Please help me find my cabin, he said. That's strange. I can feel his hand on my arm, thought Lucy. You can't feel a ghost's hand. The lights came back on again and Lucy heard another voice a woman's. Oh, dad, there you are. Said the woman. I was looking for you everywhere. She saw Lucy and smiled. I'm sorry. Was my father bothering you? She asked. He's got a very bad memory and he gets confused. So he isn't a ghost, said Lucy. Did you say ghost? Asked the woman. Lucy was very embarrassed and went quickly to her cabin. I'm really stupid, she thought. There aren't any ghosts on this ship. Chapter five. On the Viking ship. Lucy felt very cold. She put a coat over her clothes and took a blanket for Paul. Then she returned to the empty dining room. It was 12:30 and the students were in their cabins, changing into their swimsuits. Paul was still at the ship's clinic, so Lucy went out onto the deck. At the back of the ship, Lucy saw the tall girl with the blue dress. Aren't the icebergs incredible? Lucy said to her. Yes, they are, said the girl in a strange, heavy accent. Where are you from? Asked Lucy. I'm from Eric's farm in Greenland, said the girl. It's the most beautiful place in the world. Where did you learn English? Asked Lucy. You speak very well. I travel on ships all the time, explained the girl. I listen to the American and English tourists. Suddenly Lucy heard the horn again. Do you know where that noise is coming from? Asked Lucy. I'm sorry. I can't talk to you now, said the girl. My father's calling me. She climbed up on the side of the ship and put her arms in front of her. Hey, what are you doing? Asked Lucy surprised. Get down from there. You'll fall. I'll see you later, said the girl, and she jumped over the side. Lucy tried to catch the back of the girl's dress, but she couldn't reach it. The wind pushed Lucy and she started to fall over the side. Suddenly, a strong hand pulled the back of her coat. It was Paul. Lucy! Stop! He shouted. He tried to pull Lucy onto the deck, but he couldn't, and they both fell into the cold, dark sea. I can't swim, Paul shouted in terror. He was kicking his legs and trying to stay above the water. I'll hold you, Lucy said, and she put her shoulder under Paul's head. She was terrified. Nobody will see us, she thought. We're going to die. The ship was moving further and further away from them. Paul started to panic and he moved his arms and legs. Don't move, Lucy shouted. I can't hold you! Help me! Cried Paul. I'm going to drown. He threw his arms around Lucy's neck and pushed her under the water. Suddenly a cold black shadow appeared above them and something touched Lucy's arm. It was a wooden or. Lucy and Paul grabbed the oar and somebody pulled them out of the water. Above the water, they saw a long wooden ship with a dragon's head and a red and white mast. This isn't a mirage, said Lucy. It's a Viking ship. Paul was trying to breathe. I don't care, he said between breaths. Quickly, let's climb onto it. They climbed over the side of the ship and fell exhausted onto the wooden deck. Are you okay? Lucy asked Paul. I'm very cold, he said. What happened? Lucy? Why did you jump from the ship? I didn't jump, Lucy said. I was trying to save somebody and I fell. What do you mean? Asked Paul. I didn't see anybody else. I saw one of the passengers, said Lucy. She was jumping into the sea, and I tried to stop her. So

where is she now? Asked Paul. Did she drown? They looked around them. They were on a very old ship with lots of broken seats. The large square mast was dirty and torn. How is this happening? Asked Lucy. We're on an ancient Viking ship in the 21st century. Maybe it's from a museum, said Paul. We're lucky we found it. We didn't find this ship, said Lucy. It found us. Huh? I think you're right, exclaimed Paul. That's really frightening. A ship that sails around on its own. It's a ghost ship, said Lucy. I'm responsible for this. A cold wind was blowing, but the ship wasn't moving. Come on. Paul said there are ores. We must try to reach the land. They each took an oar and tried to row, but the ship didn't move. We'll never move the ship without help, said Paul weakly. It probably takes 50 men to row this thing. What can we do now? Asked Lucy. We'll wait for the cruise ship to return for us, said Paul. But they won't know that we're missing, said Lucy. Mr. Jones thinks you're ill and in your cabin, and I'm not sharing a cabin with anybody. Are you? No, I'm not, Paul replied. You're right. They won't look for us. They're only returning from the trip tomorrow morning, said Lucy. But we'll probably freeze to death by then. Chapter Six, Fraudes. The cold wind blew around the ship and Paul was trembling lousy felt his head. And it was very hot. You've got a temperature. She said worried. They looked for a warmer place to sit and found a small room at the back of the ship. There was some old blankets on the floor. Look at the names on these blankets said Lucy there from a cruise ship. The clean and dry pour observed. Other people were on this ship recently. What happened to them. Lucian Paul. SAT under the blankets suddenly there was a loud noise. What's that asked, Paul? Where is it coming from? It's the one, we heard on the cruise ship Lucy said but now it's much louder. There's somebody else on this ship. They looked through the wooden door. The girl with the blue dress was standing. Opposite the door. Watching them. Pull jumped in horror. How did you? Where did you come from? He asked the girl lafed That's the girl from our cruise. Ship said Lucy, she's a Ghost. Don't be ridiculous. Said Paul in a Low Boyce. Are you okay? Paul asked the girl? He tried to take her and put his hand went straight through her. Oh, she is a ghost shouted. Paul. Let's get out of here. He was terrified. We can't leave. Lucy said we're on a ship. Well, I'm not staying here with a ghost shouted pool. Then he ran to the side of the ship. No don't jump said the girl you'll die I don't want that. Pull, tonto. The girl. Are you going to hurt us? He asked? No, of course. Not said the ghost. My name is freddys. What are your names? I want to be your friend. Paul sat Next to Lucy. Fraudes. I know that name he told Lucy quietly I read a book about Eric. The red his real name was Eric thorvaldsen and he had a daughter called freddys. Lucy looked at Paul in Amazement. Sheesh. Eric. The reds daughter She said. Pull wanted to move. But he was too frightened. This isn't happening. He said am I delirious from the temperature. They heard the horn again and the ship entered into a dance gray fog. Suddenly there was a loud frightening laugh and a ghostly male figure appeared. Anglo saxons. We are you on my ship the ghostly finger asked and allowed voice. Leave my ship immediately. Now, Lucy was very frightened too. The Fog disappeared. And Lucy and Paul could see the mail Ghost clearly he was the most frightening ghost of all he had bright red hair and shiny blue eyes. There was a hole in one of his hands and a shard in the other. It's Eric The red Whispered Paul Trembling with fear several other dark fingers appeared at the front of the ship. They were viking warriors. Leave my ship. I said shouted the ghost and allowed angry boys. Paul and Lucy stood up and moved slowly to the back of the ship. The wind blue pool across the ship and he it is head on the side. Are you okay asked Lucy and there don't hurt them. Father said freddy's there my friends. Eric. The red looked at his daughter and in an instant the anger disappeared from his eyes. My dear little freddys. He said I will do anything to make you happy. All these anglosaxon is your friends. Then they must stay here with you, but we don't want to be here. Said, Lucy, we want to return to our ship. The Viking turned to Lucy Angrily. My daughter wants it. So you will stay he shouted. We're in serious trouble Now

ship, her blonde hair and white skin shone and there was a sad look in her eyes. She began to tell them her father's story. In the past, my father lived in Iceland, Fratus said. But he didn't want to stay there because he did something very bad. What did he do? Asked Lucy. He fought two men and killed them, replied Freydis. So he left Iceland on a ship and travelled west. He arrived at an enormous island with ice everywhere. He explored the island until he found a fjord with green hills on either side, and he built a farm there. That was Erik's fjord, said Paul. That's right, replied Freydis. My father gave the fjord his name. What happened to your father after that? Asked Lucy. A few years later, my father decided to bring more people to populate the island, she said. So he returned to Iceland to tell people about it, but he didn't tell them the truth. What happened? Asked Lucy. He didn't tell them about the ice. He told them that there was hardly any ice, said Freydis. He called the island Greenland, so everybody believed that it was a beautiful green land. Many people returned with my father to Greenland, but they saw all the ice and they were very angry with my father. Did the people kill your father? Asked Paul. No, they didn't, replied Freydis. They didn't have the opportunity. There was a terrible illness in our village and many people died. My father and I became ill too. We both died on the same day. That's terrible, said Lucy. But why are you haunting this ship? Can't you go home to the farm? No, we can't go home, replied Freydis. Thor decided to punish my father because he lied while there is ice over Greenland. We must stay on this ship and travel around the sea. We can only return home if Greenland becomes green. Chapter nine. The sun cloud. Lucy started to feel sorry for the Viking ghosts. I understand now, she said. If the ice melts, Greenland will really be a green land. Then Thor will pardon your father and you can return to your farm. Paul looked at Freddie's tired, sad face. Well, the ice is melting now, he said. So you can go home. We can't go home yet, said Freddie's. It's too soon. Thor will send us a sign when it's time. What kind of sign? Asked Paul. According to a Viking prophecy, we'll see a sun cloud in the sky, explained Freydis. A sun cloud, said Paul. What's that? It's a bright cloud that lights up the sky, replied Freydis. Suddenly Lucy had an idea. I can help you, she said to Freydis. I know where the sun cloud is. Paul gave Lucy a strange look. What are you doing, Lucy? He whispered. The sun cloud isn't real. It's only a myth. No it isn't, Lucy said. Just trust me. It was late afternoon. The Viking ship was sailing quickly to the south. There were only a few icebergs in the sea now and the air was getting warmer. A large whale was swimming in front of the ship. Maybe it's showing us the way. Thought Lucy with a smile. Lucy and Paul were sitting at the back and the ship was full of ghosts. There were lots of Vikings with oars in their hands, and Erik the red was at the front. We must go further south, said Lucy. Please row faster. Grow faster. Erik the Red ordered his men faster. Lucy knew they were near their destination because the sun was beginning to set. Paul was very worried. Where are we going? He asked. Why are you taking us further south? We need to go north and return to Greenland. The nights are darker further south, Lucy told Paul. There'll be a sunset soon. If we're lucky, we'll see a noctilucent cloud. Suddenly, Paul understood Lucy's plan. A sun cloud, he said with a smile. You're a genius. The sky became darker and the ship continued sailing south. They were far from Greenland, but there wasn't a noctilucent cloud anywhere. The ghosts were becoming angry and impatient. Return to the coast, cried one Viking warrior. We'll get lost in this sea. Shouted another. Finally, Eric turned his angry eyes on Lucy. You lied! Which he shouted. Now I'm going to throw you into the sea. The serpent will be happy. The ghostly figure moved towards Lucy and Paul and they trembled with fear. Suddenly they heard excited voices and Freydis pointed at the sky. Look, father, she said. An enormous cloud lit up the sky, and Erik the red fell onto his knees. It's a sun cloud! Exclaimed Freydis. Yes, it's the sign, Erik said. Finally, it's time to go home.

Chapter ten. The rescue. It was midnight. The Viking ship was travelling north towards the Greenland Sea. Lucy could hear the voices of the ghosts, but she couldn't see them. The wind was blowing and they were moving very quickly. Lucy couldn't feel the movement of the waves below them. She looked over the side. The ghost ship wasn't touching the sea. It was flying. Four dolphins appeared in the water below. They followed the ship for a while and then they disappeared. Paul had a very high temperature, and he was lying on the deck with his eyes closed. Lucy covered him with blankets. He needs a doctor immediately, she thought. The ghosts are returning to Eric's farm now. I hope we'll arrive on time to meet the cruise ship. She lay next to him and closed her eyes. Lucy woke at about 7:00 in the morning. She and Paul were alone on the Viking ship. They were travelling along Erik's fjord. A big cruise ship was travelling slowly towards them. Lucy pulled Paul's arm. Wake up, she shouted. It's our cruise ship and it's going to hit us. Paul opened his eyes and pushed her away. He was delirious. Don't touch me, he cried. You can't hurt me. You're a ghost. Paul. It's me. Lucy, she shouted quickly. We must leave the ship and swim. I'm too ill and I can't swim, answered Paul weakly. The cruise ship was closer. She pulled Paul to the side and climbed up. Paul climbed weakly after her. Come on! Jump! Lucy shouted. She took Paul's hand and pulled him into the sea. The cruise ship's horn sounded and the motor stopped. The ship started to change direction. Lucy swam on her back and pulled Paul through the water. Suddenly she hit her head on some floating ice and she went under the sea. Paul opened his eyes. He was on a bed on the cruise ship and a nurse was standing next to him. Is she a ghost, he thought. The nurse touched his head and he felt her warm hand. No, she's definitely not a ghost, he decided. Welcome back. The nurse said you were delirious, talking about ghosts and Vikings. Your teachers were very worried about you. Delirious thought Paul perplexed. So the ghost Ship and the Vikings weren't real. It was all a dream. The nurse put a thermometer in Paul's mouth. We found you and your friend in the sea, she said. We don't know how you fell over the side, but luckily the ship wasn't moving. The captain saw something approaching in the water, so he stopped the motor. Then he saw you. You're very lucky. She removed Paul's thermometer and looked at it. Good. It's normal, she said. Your temperature has gone down. You don't need to go to the medical centre. Where's Lucy? Asked Paul. She's right here, replied the nurse. She probably jumped in to save you. She's a very brave girl. Lucy was lying in a bed in the corner of the room. Her eyes were closed and her face was white. Poor girl, said the nurse. She hit her head on the ice. But she's okay now. She's sleeping. Paul was very worried about Lucy. Are you certain she'll be okay? He asked in a panic. She's fine, replied the nurse. She woke before and she was asking about you. We're at Nassau Harbour now, and an ambulance is going to take her to the medical centre for tests. They just want to be certain everything's okay before she continues the trip. There were voices outside and the nurse left the room. Paul got out of bed and stood next to Lucy. He looked at her calm face. Was it really all a dream? He thought? Chapter eleven. Was it Just a dream? The nurse entered again with too medics. And they put Lucy on a stretcher. Lucy. OpenEd her eyes and looked at them in horror. Don't touch me. She shouted. Where are you taking me? It's okay. Said. Paul, We're on the cruise ship. They're taking you for tests. Lucy. Touched pulls arms. Are they biking ghosts? She asked in a frightened voice pulls mouth fell open. What did you say? He asked Viking ghosts? But it was just a dream. Pull tried to follow Lucy out of the clinic. But the nurse stopped him. You are not going anywhere, young man. She said you must rest here until tomorrow. Pull felt very weak. But he couldn't rest. He couldn't wait to see Lucy again. We are the ghosts just a dream. But then how did Lucy know about them? He thought. Mister Jones and some of the students came to visit pool. They talked about the hot Springs. The inuit village and the

inside and covered it with Earth. Then Lucy found a rock to cover it. Se rote a message on the top with a piece of white stone here lies the great Viking Explorer, Eric The red and his daughter fraudis.
