INTRODUCTION
THE BRITISH ISLES
They have constituted one State for 120 years of their history only (1801-1921).
THE UNITED KINGDOM
In its present state, it is composed of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
GREAT BRITAIN
The largest and most thickly populated of the British Isles. It includes Scotland, Wales and
England.
ENGLAND
To the south-east of Britain, the most thickly populated and richest area, the oldest political
whole, the cell that grew into the British World.
THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND
Ireland excepting Northern Ireland.
