We met with Professor Leonardo José Gonzales Urrutia for this interview. He is a language educator who has taught English for seven years. He holds both a bachelor's degree in English teaching and a master's degree in didactics. He teaches at The Buen Pastor Pamela Betesh School, which is part of the Las Mañanitas community at present. A wide range of English- related subjects, including speaking, grammar, phonetics, and vocabulary, is taught by Professor Gonzales. His primary focus is on children and teenagers. A specialized course he completed in Academic English for Second Language Learners in Canada, in addition to his academic background, improved his understanding of language acquisition under diverse conditions. His motto “Fuerzate a hablar y vas a apprehender” embodies his teaching philosophy, which holds that students must force themselves to speak in order to internalize the language completely. His observations offer a valuable perspective on second language learning and instruction. INTERVIEW SCRIPT Interviewer: Thank you, Professor Gonzales, for accepting this short interview. In my seven years of working with kids and teens, I've found that those who are exposed to the language on a regular basis—whether through games, music, or social media—tend to acquire it more organically. Additionally helpful is a nurturing atmosphere where they feel free to make mistakes. The phrase Fuerzate a hablar y vas a aprehender is something I always tell my students because it truly makes a difference to push yourself to speak. 2. Grammar Teaching Question: What do you think are the main advantages of teaching grammar explicitly in a second language classroom? Leonardo: Grammar instruction, in my opinion, provides children with the foundation they need to comprehend language. M y pupils frequently gain confidence after they comprehend the rationale behind the construc
What we appreciated most was how deeply he connects with his students, understanding their fears and encouraging their progress. His experience, both local and international, has clearly shaped a teaching philosophy that values effort, empathy, and continuous growth. This interview not only deepened our understanding of language teaching but also reminded us of the profound impact that a dedicated teacher can have on their learners’ journey.
