Dear Diary, Today my mother has given me some instructions about what I have to do to become a good woman. She has told me about practical advices related to domestic work like how to set a table with an important guest or how to wash the colour clothes. She has also spoken about cooking tips like how to prepare a good meal. She has also given me the typical advices that mothers do, for example, not to walk without a hat in the sun or not to speak with bad boys. My mother has also told me about medical advices like how to make a good medicine if I have a cold. Above all my mother wants me to be a good woman and not to behave like a prostitute. On one hand, I understand that my mother is a very traditional woman and she has to educate me in the same way, following the socio-cultural values and gender roles that her own mother taught her in the past. She has the responsibility to transmit all these values to me. But on the other hand, I do not want to be like her. I do not want to follow these traditional values and gender stereotypes because I think that boys and girls must have the same opportunities and rights. Girls do not have to be discriminated, they have to be free. For example, I would like to study, go to university and have my own professional life. I would like to choose the person I want to marry. I want my husband to respect me. Before I marry I would like to travel to other places. I will have to speak to my mother about all this. She is worried about what society will think if I do not follow all her advices. But how can I make her understand that I will be a good person even if I don’t follow her advices?
