7. Joint vs. distributive coordination

8. Expanding coordination

9. Non-basic coordination

1. What is coordination?

• Coordination consists of linking two phrases, clauses or sentences using a coordinator ( coordinating

conjunctions ). It involves the linking of units at the same syntactic level. Unmarked coordination is possible.

Class exercise 1:

a. John wrote the article and presented it.

b. They must have seen John or Mary.

c. They went to London or to Edinburgh.

d. The film was interesting but long.

e. I wonder whether you should stay or whether you should go.

2. Symmetric and asymmetric coordination

• Symmetric : When the order of the coordinated elements can be altered and the meaning of the sentence does

not change.

• Asymmetric : When the order of the coordinated elements cannot be altered because the meaning of the

sentence changes, or because of convention [Irreversible binominals].

3. Marking coordination and types of coordination:

• Unmarked coordination.

• Marked by repetition of the coordinator.

• Marked by correlative coordination.

• Syndetic : A coordinator links the units

• Asyndetic : The coordinators are not present.

• Polysyndetic : The coordinator is repeated each time a new unit is introduced.

4. Layered coordination: It refers to a coordinate structure functioning as a coordinate within a larger one.
